Lol... I'll continue my deer season prep threads. This one is about skeeters. Start planning on battling them right now, so you have all the gear you need come bow season to keep them off you. I'm talkin about make sure you have a thermacell, with plenty of butane, and pads. Buy the bulk pack refills now while they are in stock in stores, or you have time to get them shipped online. If you use DEET spray, get it. If you use Permethrin make sure you have it and its applied to your cloths. Make sure you're hunting with a long sleeve shirt, long pants, gloves, and a mesh headmask. Everything you can do to keep em off you will just make your hunt that much more enjoyable and successful. I've done early season hunts with no chemicals and even with protective cloths they are brutal. Anywhere that your thin cloths are pulled tight to your skin they can get through. That includes knees, elbows, gloves, etc. What an annoyance! I highly recommend a Thermacell, and its light enough and valuable enough I carry a backup just in case. Theres nothin like trying to hide from approaching deer while mosquitos are dive bombing you!! [ninja]

I bought my first Thermacell a couple months ago. Haven't used it yet. Where do folks put it while in use? Do you use the clip that is on the carry case and clip it on your belt? If in a blind, I guess you can lay it on the ground by your feet - but what if you are in a tree stand? Do you put it at your feet on your tree stand platform?

I have the carry case, I think I might just clip it on my belt, but I don't know if it will get in the way or not.

The mosquito is the most studied insect on the planet due to the numerous public health issues, and AFAIK, DEET is still the only thing scientifically proven to repel mosquitoes.

The other 1,847 other products on the market are, until proven otherwise, are a waste of your money.

I would wear skunk spray if it worked. If there is ONE mosquito in a 10 mile radius, It would be very easy to find. It would be somewhere on me. I dont even like to hunt much in warm weather, But sometimes the urge is just too much to resist.

I start it before I get out of my car and it hangs behind clipped to the backpack while I'm walking. When I get in the stand or blind, it just sits by me still clipped to the backpack. Always carry extra butane and pads and a mosquito suit as a backup.

Permethrin dip for the clothes, Thermacell in the stand.

In the blind I keep the thermacell as close to the opening as possible. You do not want to be inhaling that stuff with poor ventilation. In the stand, I clip it on my hunting pack which is usually hanging next to me. ALWAYS have extra butane and pads, because you just never know. I have had it not work, where it just seems to not repel... mostly that was black flies (and in Canada), but that's why I now have a backup. Also, they have incredible customer service if you ever have an issue.

One morning a couple yrs ago I stepped into the Ameristep blind to see fog in my hat light beam - No - mosquitos! Backed out and tossed in the thermocell as a smoke grenade. Wish I could have had a video of that. They vacated the place real quick! South Jersey can have crazy concentrations of them.

At my parent's farm in Virginia, they have the Tiger Mosquitoes. They are large and aggressive. I have seen a few here in Jersey. Only a matter of time before they are up here in full force.

I stand (partially) corrected.

I was curious about this, so I looked for studies on the NIH website, and I found 4 studies evaluating the use of Thermacell against mosquitoes.

1) Southeastern Turkey - Thermacell showed a 92% reduction in mosquito bites over non-treated individuals
2) Arkansas - Measured 4 competing products, the best of which showed an 83% reduction in mosquito bites, though I dont know which scored 83%, since you need to pay for data. So if Thermacell was the best, it was 83%, if not, worse than 83%.
3) Israel - Thermacell showed a distance-depandent reduction in mosquito bites of 96.1% within 3 feet, 89.9% within 7.5 feet, and 76.7% within 10 feet.*
4) Florida - Evaluated 5 competing products. Thermacell was the repellent-winner at 76%, but judged 2nd-best in the study to OFF!® Clip-On at 64% reduction in mosquito bites, due to OFF! lasting 3x longer and being more convenient, etc..**

So clearly Thermacell works, but not as well as DEET. The one caveat is, Thermacell is obviously not going to work nearly as well if it's breezy out than it does with no wind.

* For the folks who swear by wearing this thing, if this study is correct it shows there's pretty much no point in doing that given 3 feet away provided very high protection.
** OFF!® Clip-On costs 3x less than Thermacell and lasts 3x longer, so if this study is correct, I'd say Thermacell is somewhat pointless unless you think 12% repellent is worth the cost, and you dont want to wear DEET.

I can tell you without a shadow of doubt a fired up thermacell repels em like no other.
But this is not true, as DEET is more effective.

I can't speak for the studies only in the field experience.this turkey season I was sitting by a still creek.when I would go in in the dark the mosquitos were so thick it was insane.i would get Eaton alive until I lit my thermo cell and gave it 5 min to circulate.i usually keep it at least 6-8 feet away from me.i couldn't have hunted without it.deet works but I call b.s. on the studies evaluation of the thermocell.i hold true life field use as the ultimate scientific study.i dont take those studies seriously.if you do some digging most of them are funded by the victor.
