Help Decide Between 4X2 and 4x4

I've seen such a huge variety of vehicles used by hunters in my time and since I've been able to afford it, I've always gone with the 4x4s. Money is tighter these days and I have to make a decision today as to whether to get the Nissan Frontier in the 4x2 or 4x4. My reason for this post is not necessarily to get your feedback on teh FOntier specifically although PM me if you have any info on it but how many of you get away without having 4 wheel drive.

Perect example as to why I almost feel it's a must is last opening day for shotgun was absolute garbage. I went from Rockaway up to Montague in filthy conditions. I'm not sure I would do that anymore. I am not going to really go bounding across fields anymore or go off road but would you hesitate to even park in some areas without the 4x4 option on your car.

It's really a cost/benefit thing.

My theory behind 4 wheel drive is the same as carrying a condom or having a gun in the house. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Just my opinion.

i just bought a different car in a 4x2 front wheel dr. the same car was offered in all wheel dr but for me, work, and my family, the gas mileage far outweighed the amount of times it snows or I actually need the 4wd or awd.

I was stuck on the ramp at the delaware river ith my boat and two wheel drive pick up for a couple hours. seemed like a decent gravel launch boat slipped off ramp and was hung on something in water. finally offloaded boat pulled truck up and reloaded boat in different spot. sounds easy but I was by myself and had nothing to tie the boat off to while moving truck. nexttime pulled to side of road while hunting. it snowed while hunting walked a couple miles before I found someone that would loan me a shovel. I then spent almost 2 hours digging myself out while it was snowing like crazy! long story short F-250 4x4 super duty diesel is my hunting truck. I use another vehicle to commute.

Are you buying new or used? You can start off by saving a lot by buying a low mileage used vehicle.

i was glad i had 4 wheel drive on the last day of shotgun season last year and then in january for bow...knowing you dont have it when its supposed to be a bad weather day will probably keep you home? if so, maybe its worth it to have it on that alone...i know i use my 4wd to get to work too on those nasty work days so it gets use that way too. look for a used one!!

4x4 in years past I have used it and i am confident it was the only difference between sleeping in my bag versus sleeping in my bed, sometimes depending on the trail and conditions you might be able to 2wd it into a spot and after 6-8 hours of snow sleet rain etc need 4wd to get out on the same trail

I have a 2010 frontier and it has the on the fly 4x4 hi and low or 2wd. It's a great little truck. I have done everything in it that is think able and it keeps on kicking. Turning it into my official dog truck shortly and will be getting something a bit larger for the hell of it but I have no complaints.

Forget about the 4x2. This isn't Texas. A 4x4 is a must if you hunt an area that you aren't parking on pavement to get in to which is basically 99.9 percent of the time. This should be a no brainer.

I think it's between teh Frontier and Xterra right now but if it's 4x2 it has to be the Frontier.

I dont really go off road but just driving in the snow is enough to make 4wd a necessity for me

my 4-wd has saved my ass on the road and off the road. just knowing you will be safer in bad wheather is well worth it.

A rear wheel drive 2wd truck is worse than a car in the snow. Remember the winter we just had. 4wd all the way

Your right, but we're not discussing a 1-10 chance. We're going by probability an reliability. 4x4 is a must in jersey. No if, and's or but's about it.

Agreed, 4x4 is necessary in NJ. I do about of 4 wheeling and the saying is 2wd you get stuck, 4wd you get really stuck, 4wd with lockers gets you really stuck where no one can get to you.
