Governor: No bear hunt this year
BY TOM HESTER JR.
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

TRENTON (AP) -- Gov. Jon S. Corzine today rejected a bear hunt for this year and ordered state environmental officials to control bears without killing them.

Corzine had until today to readopt regulations authorizing a bear hunt from Dec. 4-9 in the state's northwestern region, but he declined to take action, arguing the state hasn't given enough consideration to other bear control methods.

Instead, Corzine ordered state Environmental Protection Commissioner Lisa Jackson to review the effectiveness of the state's bear management plan and whether last year's bear hunt, in which about 300 bears were killed, helped reduce contact between bears and people.

"I believe it is not appropriate to go forward with a bear hunt for this year without first trying to implement significant new, non-lethal bear mitigation measures," Corzine said.

Corzine said the bear hunt regulations he was asked to readopt weren't approved by his administration, which took office in January. He said the state hasn't done enough to implement anti-bear measures such as educating residents on how to live with bears and ensuring food and garbage don't draw bears to houses.

Corzine said he would provide money to implement other bear control measures, but didn't detail how much.

Corzine's move came as no surprise. On Friday, the governor indicated he wouldn't approve a bear hunt this year because he's seen no evidence it would help control the animals. His position angered northwestern New Jersey lawmakers who favor a bear hunt.

Sens. Robert Littell and Anthony Bucco and Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose, Republicans who represent northwestern New Jersey where most of New Jersey's bears can be found, issued a statement Friday that deemed Corzine's plan "a governor's defiance of the law in order to satisfy an extremist fringe that seeks to ban all hunting."

The hunt would have been the third since 2003, when the state held its first bear hunt in 35 years to try to control a bear population that had grown to an estimated 3,200 animals.

Last year's hunt was held in a 1,500-square-mile region in northwestern New Jersey between interstates 78 and 287, though bears have been spotted in all 21 counties.

I guess all you have to do is talk to the bears and tell them that they cant destroy crops, kill livestock/pets, rummage through peoples supposedly bear proof cans, break into peoples garages/houses and must stay in a certain area that has an invisible barrier.

Wonderful...spend more tax dollars for failing research instead of making money each year on bear permits and hunting licenses.

You think Corzine gives a [no swearing please] about your money?

He was chairman of Goldman Sachs for chrissake. He wipes his [no swearing please] with hundred dollar bills while sitting on a golden toilet mounted in his Lamborghini as he's pulling doughnuts around his mansion.

You know this would appear to be a very accurate assessment of the situation. I can't believe that an educated person that has reached the position of governor wouldn't be able to see that this is the situation with clarity. The solution seems very obvious from an economic standpoint let alone scientific one and the governor's decision has got to be based on other reasons: personal ethics, opinion, votes/politics, or corruption, etc. This very fact doesn't make me feel comfortable about NJ's top politician and his leadership ability.

Corslime is only shooting himself in the foot on this. The bear population is at unsafe/unhealthy levels. Only a matter of time before something really bad happens in a human/black bear encounter. Any effort/money that the state takes to implement another non lethal management plan (contraception, etc.) will be wasted because the bottom line is nothing works as well or as cost efficiently as hunting does. Ultimatley, this was a bad decision by Corzine, and the truth will surface in time.

he DOSEN'T WANT TO SEE IT COME UP AGAIN
He won't be able to avoid it when someone is maimed or killed. Its going to happen and based on the rate of increase in bear I've seen in the last 5 years in West Milford, it'll be sooner than those A.H.s expect.

THEIR BANK ACCOUNT'S
Thats why I'm not buying an extended bow permit or muzzleloader permit and as of now no NJ licenses next year. I already hunt upstate NY and in Jersey I hunt right across the border from the Sterling Forest area. I'm going to start looking into where I can hunt in that area. Remember from this point forward your licences and permit puchases support the policies of the NJDEP and Governor Wino Corzine. Everyone should write their state reps and call for the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife to be removed from DEP control. When Littel and his daughter introduced this type of legislation last year, I e-mailed every member of the committees studying(holding up)this legislation. For now you can hunt 'Indian style' or Grandpa's rules and vote against funding for the state parks and all democrats. You may not win, but you'll sleep better. I'm already a member of the NRA and NJFSC and like I said I'll join ANY organization that beats Wino Corzine in court AND I will contribute an extra $1,000.

Wasn't there problem bears found in a dump someone reported recently? They will continue to shoot the bears them selves and senselessly destroy them one by one.

Can't fight city hall. Not enough time or money. This is a rape of the resource.[sad]

I don't see how he can not allow the hunting of Bears but will allow the state till kill them one by one and leave there rotting carc [no swearing please] in the middle of the woods on state land that hunters paid for and go on with not letting the hunt happen but the state killings go on with the wasteful killing of the Bear or any other animal for thafact. Anti's are just that they are against Hunters and hunters only not for the animals sake but for there own a chance to beat on rather then be beat on.! I have not seen one Anti complain about the state killing Bears or any of the towns killing Bears but as soon as a hunter kills one all hell breaks loose!!! Sorry but FU!!! Corslime and all you F'ing Anti hypocrite Mother F'ers (Sorry for the Rant but the more I think about it the more PO I get!!![mad][mad][mad]

Corzine doesnt care about us hunters. He knows that 90% of hunters dont vote for him where 100% of the peta pansey tree hugging terrorist do. So, he'll continue to dictate based on who will help put him back in office next time, what ever office that is.

If every hunter would skip hunting and buying license's for one year.... Put a hurting on them...Hurt them where it count's.. in their wallet's....
No. That "puts a hurting" on NJ F&W, not Corzine. NJ F&W is a different dedicated fund and does not go to the general fund.

Not buying a license is EXACTLY what Corzine, PETA and HSUS wants.
