Change of address - waiting

Hi all,

I filled out my forms for a change of address to my township middle of April. Fast forward to today and we are over 10 weeks out.

Initially when I spoke to the detective he said two weeks. I was like WOW. Filled out my background check online and was done. He called me about 4 weeks later and said I never filled out my background check. So I called the state police and provided him them my receipt number and they told me it was emailed to him literally one day after I filled it out. Called him back and he said he had it in his email (overlooked since he was on vacation that week) and that he had everything he needed. The previous township already had sent my records as well, references filled out...and he would call shortly.

Well now 5 weeks later and no word. I also called just shy of two weeks ago and left a message on to check the status - no return call. Called end of last week and left another message - still no return call.

Any suggestions? I don't want to bust chops since I want to file my pistol permits immediately afterwards but I don't get why I can't get a return call now. I understand it takes time (I think my initial was just under 3 months) but now I can't even get him to call me back and he is the only one that deals with permits.

Voorhees Twp., you need an appointment to turn in your paperwork, told 3 to "several" days to get an appointment, almost 2 weeks since I left the first message, 1-1/2 weeks since I left the second message (nobody ever answers the phone!), still no return call, pretty obvious how this is going to work out! Looks like it may be a year before I have a PA address to utilize...this state sucks!!!

You should have applied for the pistol permits at the same time you filed for the address change..one stop shopping all done at once

The change of address for the FID card is the biggest scam going in this state. There is absolutely no reason why a complete back ground check has to be done again. If you already have a card one was already done along with one that will be competed when you purchase. It should be same day. Walk in with new proof of residence an get issued a new card with your new address on it. Such BS.

I was told that I needed to get the address changed prior to the pistol permits because it could lead to some confusion (go figure).

What is really irritating is that I can't get a simple call back? Granted this is probably at the rock bottom of the list but come on now......2 weeks and you can't return a phone call? I just don't want to keep hounding them with messages since they don't seem to care to return them in the first place. My initial took just under 3 months and it looks like my address change is going to take longer than that. Ridiculous here!

A change of address is not a rubber stamp for an automatic approval of new card. The issuing agency has to do an investigation to see if there has been any disqualifiers since the original was issued or if there were any out of state arrests that would disqualify them. Your statement seems to be passion and opinion motivated, not based in fact. I am sure you would agree that not everyone who wants a gun should have one

It can be and should be done all at once. The officer just made more work for you AND HIM

How is this any different from someone who has never changed an address yet new "disqualiers" as you say have come about over time through the course of the initial issue of the card? In your case then should every FID card holder have to renew there card every 2,5, or 10 years and be re checked? Why is it that just because someone moves within the state constantly warrant the whole new process to begin over and over again? Someone who also never changed an address can also be involved in out of state arrests, but I guess there ok since they lived in the same place for 30 years? It will all come out at time of purchase, whether or not you changed an address or not. No passion or opinion here friend. Just common sense

When you call my township they have an automated message explaining that they can not give out any information on where our FID applications stand and that there is a huge influx of applications. I did the address change and it took over 6 months. A phone call for FID wasnt even an option really

Anyone who never changed their address will not be able to purchase, they will be denied at retail for not having a second form of ID with a matching address. That means no guns or ammo. Anyone who does have a disqualifier will be denied by NJNICS and the State Police will notify the issuing PD that the card is subject to seizure. Those that live at the same address for 30 years will be cleared by NICS for purchase. The card is valid for life as long as none of the 9 disqualifiers happen over that lifetime. No where, anywhere, did I say anything about a renewal. I am telling you the process and the reasoning behind it which is in statute. Most importantly as we all know, some PD's are much quicker than others

I know this stuff takes time...but don't tell initially tell me two weeks....then have some issues. A month ago I was told he had everything he needed and it would be ready shortly....well it hasn't been and now he won't return a phone call. Makes me wonder what is up.

I found his email so I think I may go that route or i may just stop at the station and drop off my pistol permits

UPDATE...I decided I was done waiting for a callback to get my appointment to turn in paperwork. Started calling every hour on the hour, and then some, starting at 9am, and I actually had the firearms administrator answer the phone at 1:45pm...appointment is set for next Tuesday at 3pm!

I may still be waiting 3-6 months from now but at least the process is moving forward...persistence paid off this time.

This system may have made sense in 1966, when it was incepted, but since the advent of the NICS system, this is all just needless bureaucracy and a tremendous waste of police resources. If the NICS system can check someone's background in minutes, there is no reason to have the PD's do a full blown background check every time someone applies for more pistol permits or an address change as the NJSP is requesting the towns do.

Well i got an answer via email tuesday. The detective said he has been very busy this month...however the permit is on the desk of the lieutenant to be signed. However....he has been out sick. So fingers crossed it should be any time now since it sounds like everything else is complete.....
