So my daughter passed her hunters ed a few weeks back and I've been traveling for work so I haven't had a chance to got to Dicks with her to get the official license. Well we went last night and this REALLY happened. So the guy is checking us out and entering in all the info and he's trying to figure out how much it is. So I said, it's free for the youth license. He argues with me for a few minutes and then finally relents when he finds it on his handy dandy card. Then he proceeds to tell me it's good until 12/31/14 and I say actually it's good until 12/31/16...same thing ensues, same result.

Then the classic of all classics. Ashley asked me if this was just her license or if it there were permits also. I told her it was a firearms and bow license (youth of course) which also had a pheasant stamp blah blah blah. This clown break in and says, "yes, honey, your dad is right and it's important to know the difference between a license and a permit." I'm thinking I can't wait for this train wreck of an explanation. He continued, "you see a license means you know how to handle a gun and a permit means you're allowed to hunt on somebody else's property." Ashley looks up at me like, you gotta be friggin' kidding me right? She proceeded to explain to him what license and permit was in the hunting world. Glad she paid attention in class!

My neighbor walked into the Dick's in Mt.laurel, handed the guy a printout of his online test (The one you are suppose to give to the field test instructors) and walked out with an all around with everything else unlocked. They used the number the F&G website assigned to his passed test to issue his license.

I just purchased my turkey permit at Sports Authority in Wash. Twp. yesterday. I had problems too :) because the cashier initially didn't select the right options to purchase a permit awarded from the lottery; she got it eventually and it didn't take too long. But I can at least say Sports Authority in Wash Twp is still a NJ DFW agent for purchasing licenses/permits. Of course, other than that, there isn't much else going for that store (their fishing dept is anemic and there is no hunting dept at all).

Stores make I think $0.50 per license sale, so it's not zero just as an FYI. Also, Walmart by me sells licenses although I don't get mine there.

Hey Bud, not sure if you are aware, but if you hunt muzzle loader, she can now hunt with you, as that test she took for shot gun, is also good for muzzle loader, there is no more test for Muzzle loader, if you already have a your shotgun , come june 1st you just go in and buy the rilfe permit and your good to go.

After I retired in 1998, I worked at Dick's because I needed a lot of "stuff" and I really liked working there since they treated me well. I didn't "gradiate" high school and could explain the game laws and rules to my customers. I also listened to what the customer had to say which made me realize there is a wealth of of knowledge walking into the store each day. What we have now are the results of the American education system, a bumper crop of smart idiots. Of course being older I suppose I still had the American "work ethic" and did my job. I'd still be there but huntin and fishin got in the way. The young kids hated working there because they had to, whereas after 30 years in a power plant, I though of it as a vacation with pay after all those days of blistering heat and freezing weather. I was also paid more than the minimum wage because of the skills I brought to the business. When I go there now, I just listen to the associate blather and chuckle to myself.

Tell Ashley congratulations DB. The guy behind the counter was selling sneakers the day before. He will be selling Athletic Supports tomorrow and will be an expert at that also [hihi]

Not surprising - This is where our "incident" happened!!!

You are correct, at her field test, she did the bow test, then the shooting part of the gun section. Then they walked you over to a section where they explained muzzy and the different types of powders. She was able to get her firearms and bow license but has to wait until June 1st to get her rifle permit.

Glad I read this as my daughter just passed her test Saturday and I am taking her to Bob Kislins for he license today and was going to buy her an All Around Sportsman until I saw your post about Shotgun, Bow, and Pheasant stamp being free for youths. Now I just gotta buy her a fresh water fishing license and rifle permit. Thanks for sharing and saving me some $$$$.

Mt. Laurel used to be a good store. They had this young kid who was really good and new his way around the hunting department. He is no longer there and it sounds like they went down hill. When I say young I say in his twenties and this was about 5 years ago. I stay away from Dicks for the most part anymore because they are cluless. If anything requires knowledge I go elsewhere but if I am buying gear: boots, clothing etc... I'll go there if they have a sale or need something quick.

Great story, you should have reported it to the store manager so the youngster at the register learns the right way and does not frustrate someone else. You have a smart daughter congratulations on her entering the realm of hunting.

I think it's a requirement to operate the license & permit machine that you actually know nothing about hunting and fishing. I pay the extra money & get them all online instead of dealing with the dumb asses at Dicks. By far the worst location is in Paramus, the lady that operates the machine is completely clueless!
