I'm considering buying a little place for a family getaway in brick on the Metedaconk river somewhere off of Princeton ave, I know the area got hit hard by Sandy, but I would be looking at something that sits up higher off the river but still has a boat dock. We're not big salt water fisherman cause of seasickness but love to fish. Can you catch flounder, fluke and blues with any consistency back in the river or do I have to travel pretty far form home to get into fish. Do they catch bass back in the river? Or is this a pipe dream? Can I keep myself busy catching some fish with the kids without having a 45 minute boat ride? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

During early spring you can catch school bass and blues. Flounder during the season. Fluke I have seen caught, but not frequently. Snappers later summer. The popular spot with most avid fisherman in the bay for flounder is the mantoloking bridge. You can also do well there for bass in the evenings.

Beware where you buy. I will bet most of those homes east of rt70 will need to be lifted.

That being said there is very good fishing and crabbing in the river. You could actually go up by the rt70 bridge and catch Largemouth and Pickerel in and around Forge Pond. Also there is very good Duck Hunting in that area. The Ditch is a hotspot.

flounder, crabbing, weakfish, snapper, and croakers are all good fishing there. Fluke, sporadic, theres much better spots toward the bay. for fluke and bass you will mostly want to get out in the bay, more than the metedeconk channel. the ocean will be about an hr run for either the barnegat, or the manasquan (closer, but you have to go through the canal). The manasquan river usually averages better fishing year round. but it WILL be that 45 min ride (most of that being the canal) the plus side, your very close to anything on land off princeton ave. shopping, resteraunts, etc. but for a real fishing hotspot...not so much. you will/can catch fish, but the fishing is better just a bit farther into the bay. it kind of depends on where along the metedeconk you are. towards the end, your almost there, towards RT 70, you have a few miles to the start of the bay. and it depends on your boat, how much ground you can easily cover. for the most part, the whole metedeconk is a pretty sheltered cove, so outside boat traffic, its usually pretty calm, (or at least your able to favor a lee side in any weather) But thats pretty much fishing anywhere around that area. and it is by no means a cheap area, be wary, especially now of any deal that seems too good to be true. carefully check the zoning, and the building codes, which can vary greatly even from house to house.

Best fishing is generally up around the point pleasant canal and the mantoloking bridge (very popular winter flounder spot). Late summer the weakfish move in and can be all over the river chasing schools of snappers, peanut bunker and mullet. Past two years I have noticed a lot of bait in the river. Where there is bait there are fish.

You can duck hunt forge pond?

used to, cant anymore since they built the golf course. there only a very small stretch east of 70 where you can, but i havent been there in years either. every time the closest houses would call F&G, they would come, check us and say, you CAN hunt here, but we request you find another spot. It used to be great, especially early season when the weather was real bad. shot a lot of woodies there, and even in the pond and up the creek.. but thats all history now. Theres probobly posts left from old blinds i had there, and I cant even say its still legal anymore up that end.

I had a lot of good times hunting Forge Pond myself. I grew up in the neighborhood right next to it. Used to come home from school grab my gun walk through the neighborhood with it. (Cased of course). Man times have changed. The last I hunted it was the late eightys.

Thank you for such an informative post.

bowhunter, my family has a house along the Metedaconk river that has been in the family since the 1920's. I grew up spending the summer down there fishing off the dock and in the bay/ocean by boat. Like many areas, the fishing is not quite what it use to be but it has made a bit of a comeback and you can have a nice time catching fish in the river. As many have said, you can catch a number of species but the most fun if you have kids will be the snappers and crabs. Seasonally you can do very well with the weakfish and catch some good size as well. The largest problem you will encounter if you have kids and buy a house along the water of the Metedaconk is the jellyfish. It is near impossible to swim in the Metedaconk now without getting stung by jellyfish. Not a big deal for adults, its just irritating but the kids go ballistic screaming and crying.

Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Arne pretty much nailed it for you! Not much fishing in the river itself and even the bay can be pretty poor fishing most of the time. The ocean and the manasquan is where the action is for the most part up in the northern part of the bay. You can duck hunt small parts (very small parts) of the conk east of the 70 bridge but you have to go to the police station and buy day permits. It use to be five dollars a day and you had to choose in advanced what days and that was kinda lame. They would only offer so many for a day cause its such a small area. That river is also a hot spot for the bagadouches in there loud ass 40 foot go fast boats doing 80 up and down it all day.

Hit Em Nasty and happybloodtrail are correct, there always use to be some serious powerboats ripping up and down the river but I notice less the last couple years. Obama and the gas prices have made the toys less affordable even for the rich I guess!

I had my boat in a marina on the Metedaconk (Cassideys Marina) for about 6 years (Sandy absolutely destroyed that whole area - took a week just to locate my boat and I was one of the lucky ones). I've since moved to South Jersey and i'm in a new marina down here so cant speak to Post-Sandy Metedaconk conditions but other than occasional schools of peanut bunker and decent crabs I've never caught or heard of any of the prior named fish caught up river. If you run down past F-Cove you can start to hit some fish but generally myself and most other boats would shoot the canal and rather fish the bay or ocean. It is a hike to get to the Manasquan Inlet but once you hit the ocean there its some of the best fishing for Bass, Blues and bottom fish in NJ and arguably on the east coast (north of Florida). Its about a 40 minute run to the inlet - absolutely worth it when the fish are around! The Metedaconk is very brackish and I believe this is why there has never really been any of the predatory fish around - just my 2 cents...

You will definitely get the speed-boat guys running up and down the river on any decent weather day from Memorial day to Labor day. They can be dicks as well, sucks but it is sheltered water and the channel is pretty much a straight run fur them to run the piss out of their boats.

One fun thing for the kids though - if the Pirate boat made it through Sandy then he will be running the river all summer long. Is very cool to watch!

I have a place also just south of the Metedaconk, we are east of Hooper ave. Just near the mouth where the bay gets wide, just south around the shoreline is Cattus Island and Green Island. we do well with crabs, all the years I have been there I have never really fished it. We are in Silverton, across the water is Brick Township. Nice area there.
