Hello everyone, My name is Bryan. I'm brand-new to archery and hunting. I want to start with a re-curve.(I have shot a bow before) I was at a local hunting store and saw some nice re-curve bows for $115 and i was thinking of buying one.(I shoot bows there with my brother) Currently, with a compound i find it somewhat difficult to draw a 45# draw weight, but I can put a nice grouping at 20 yards with it. The re-curve im looking at is adjustable from 35-50 pound draw weight. I would like to try hunting next season also. I would like your opinions of buying one of these bows and if it would be possible to start shooting a 35# re-curve off the bat and work my way up to a 50#.

any Advice would be appreciated Thank you.

Hey bud, learning to shoot a recurve us good. Definitely archery. Passing the safety course if you haven't already is going to be tough.
I'll never steer you away but remember traditional equiptment takes a very serious commitment. But hey you've earned your title "archer" if you do. Seems lots if people want to wear an archer's "patch" if you will yet use everything possible to get the bow to shoot itself.
Bear in mind if you can't afford the time, aren't willing to pass tons of shots, to go it the hard way than perhaps an adjustable compound could be the answer. Still takes practice just not exactly the same amount.

If you start shooting now and shoot say twice a week with the recurve you should be capable of passing the test for next year. Glad to see a new hunter not looking to take the easiest route (crossbow) for once! Good Luck to you and when you shoot that deer next year post it on here. It will be a much deserved harvest.

Hi Bryan,

I just started shooting compound bow last month (totally new to archery) and I started and still am at a 35# draw weight. From what the guys in the store told me, your muscles will get used to the motion and you'll be at a higher draw weight soon enough. I assume it works the same for recurve. Recurve is a challenge, so good for you [up]. I don't have any recommendations for recurve bows, but I can ask when I hit the range on Friday. I want to try hunting next season too...

First off welcome to the dark side. Hunting with traditional gear takes a certain mindset and lots of practice and dedication. However the joy and satisfaction found while doing so is above and beyond anything you can imagine. That being said.

Try out a bunch of different bows. Don't be afraid to start light as that will help you learn proper form and shooting technique which is of the utmost importance with trad gear. Anyone can pick up a compound or Xbow and for the most part aim and hit what they are aiming at.

Try meeting up with local trad shooters to watch and learn more and don't be afraid to ask questions. Most trad shooters will gladly lend a hand to help you learn the way.

Where are you located? Maybe one of us is in your area.

Good luck and welcome.

Good luck to ya! Your muscles will develop "muscle memory" as you keep practicing. But, the key is to keep practicing. It takes way less time to lose muscle memory than it takes to gain it. By the way, hows the car insurance business? Ya know, The General... Sometimes, I just crack myself up...:rofl2::rofl2:

That's where starting on the lighter bow and practicing form is key. If you're going to get serious about shooting traditional head over and check out Tradgang.com. The wealth of knowledge is amazing.

Welcome Brian, congrats on your decision to try traditional archery. For me, it is the most rewarding form of hunting I can do. To become any good at it, the practice is pretty much constant (for me it is at least). Just shoot what u can draw comfortably right now, the minimum draw weight to hunt in NJ is 35lbs and that is enough to take the biggest deer in the state! One thing, DONT get too hung up on draw weight!! I shoot a 45lb recurve and it has taken every animal from feral hogs to whitetail to a mule deer as long as I did my part. Just because you can shoot a certain draw weight OK at the range doesn't mean that you can shoot it as well when your 20yds from a monster buck and your adrenaline is pumping! Lol!

Hey Bryan,

This is my first season hunting and I started with a compound bow. I'm now planning on buying a recurve for next season though because I like the primitiveness of it. Good for you for choosing that first. Keep at it and you'll be fine

Welcome to the sit Bryan, I like that you want to start with a recurve and I also believe that if you start practicing now you'll be in great shape come next year. Just remember, you don't need an expensive bow to kill a deer.
