Hi guys,

I am new to fishing and archery (eventually want to hunt) and I am looking for any advice for newb fishing. I basically have to teach myself since I never learned and none of friends are into fishing/hunting (my girlfriends cry at the sight of a deer head[confusedagain]). I was wondering if anyone has any tips for teaching yourself? Last weekend I went out alone to a stream and watched youtube videos on how to cast[lol] that is my current status as a fisherwoman..

Ahhhh there IS still hope for America. A girl that wants to leave the world of Yuppyism. I think a tear just rolled down my cheek.

Lea first thing is never date a feller that does not hunt and fish. Oh the temptations of the Yuppie Beemer, ten pounds of Beeswax in his hair, and gold chains are many. Pick ups ride nice, you can always get something moved for free, and there will always be a empty Wa Wa cup on the front seat ifen ya ever decide to start chewin. Of course Yuppy fellers smell better, but the Doe in Heat wears off eventually. If ya help him put up his treestand you will know exactly where he is all Deer season. In a month you will be casting like a pro, and shooting the dickens out of the ten ring.

Welp ifen I know this group of hounds you have already received 10 PM's.

Get yourself a 6 to 7" rod, some line, bobber, split shot, hooks, and a bucket of worms or shiners. Then you just need to find a nice freshwater spot to cast out on. You can YouTube all the important stuff like how to tie up a fish hook, set up a bobber rig, filet a fish, and open a can of beer. Oh yeah, did you get a fish thumper yet? :)

In most nj spots you're gonna pull up crappie, sunnies, catfish, bass off a bobber rig.

if you want to saltwater fish I suggest a party boat to start, or charter a $maller boat.

Stevo, you crack me up [rofl]

Welcome to the site Lea, I'm sure there are alot of folks on here that would be willing to help. My advice would be to make yourself a nice long christmas list of things needed and get ready for fishing in the spring (unless you plan on ice fishing cause that's a whole 'nother ball of wax). Either way, take it slow, practice often, and most importantly enjoy yourself.

hahahaha i laughed so hard when i read this [rofl] and yes, spot on about the PMs..

I live near a freshwater lake, Round Valley, which has decent sized trout I hear. I actually would like to ice fish one day, but i need to learn regular fish things first.[smirk] I have a medium weight rod I got from Dick's and it seems pretty basic for a beginner. I bought the neon trout bait and i have split shots, small hooks (someone at the store showed me which ones to use for trout), bobbers..thats about it. Question: How should I set up my line? Just a bobber, split shot, and hook? There seem to be alot of styles..

With hunting..I have my prized possession, an AR15 I built:wub: but since we cant rifle hunt in NJ, I will most likely end up bow hunting. I don't know if people hunt with ARs too often anyway..
I shoot compound bow and I do meet the minimum draw weight requirement. I am currently looking at the info for the Hunter Education Class as I type..Id let to get the ball rolling for spring! Any suggestions on what to hunt? My biggest concern is teaching myself how to skin an animal. I watched YouTube vids and I hope it isnt too hard to screw Up..

Lea (that your first name? or Jewel?) - actually - you are in luck :) NJ just changed the regulations - starting this January, you actually can hunt with an AR-15 now - no deer hunting, only coyote/fox. But hey - you get to walk around the woods with an AR-15 slung over your shoulder! Read page 62 of the 2013-4 NJ Hunting Digest for the regulations (there are restrictions on ammo, time of day, etc. etc. when hunting predators with rifle). You also need to take the NJ RIFLE Hunters Education course and get a rifle permit. Again, this all starts January 1 - make sure you read the digest and do everything it says... you don't want to be walking around with an AR unless you are 100% legal in everything. :}

Best advice, learn and understand the rules and regs in nj, you got to be a lawyer. Second, you have to be patient. The learning curve is a lot faster when you have a mentor. You have to immerse yourself in the lifestyle if you want to get good. My girlfriend picked it up quick and does great. Also, never let anyone tell you you can't do something. Also, don't be afraid to fail.

wooow that is good news, i had no idea. Where can I coyote & fox hunt publicly? I assume hunting for these animals is more population control than hunting them for food. Since I live in a condo and drive a small sports car, lugging a deer home might be a challenge. I can just picture myself in the drive thru at Dunkin with dead Bambi riding shotgun because my trunk is too small...

My name is actually Julia, I'm 24, btw & sorry for all the probably obvious questions. I get alot of flack for wanting to hunt, but ive wanted to learn since i was little and I dont let a boyfriend, friends, and family tell me to change my interests [drinking] I've heard the "I dont eat venison, the poor deer" speech every day of my life, and due to my unflinching reaction and "Animals were made for us to eat" retort, I've often been told I have no soul [eyeroll]

No one in my family fishes, so when I was a lot younger I found a lot of times that books were a great help. I kind of had to figure out things for myself, and this was before we had a computer/internet. A book such as "The Complete guide to Freshwater Fishing" (or something to that affect) will give you a good rundown of fish species, habitat, bait, lures, and rod/reel suggestions. You can find any book like this on half.com for next to nothing I'm sure.

If you want to learn fly fishing, there are two groups I would recommend, especially if you don't need our male testosterone around :ko:

One is Trout Unlimited's Women's Initiative (Women | New Jersey State Council of Trout Unlimited) and the other is a women's fly fishing group that loves to help introduce newbies to the sport called the Dame Anglers (The "Dame Anglers" Fishing Club of New Jersey). You can always hire a guide as well and they can quickly bring a new angler up to speed quickly and have you catching fish with confidence quickly. Good luck and maybe some of this will rub off on the boyfriend.

Welcome! Have not read all the posts but dont go too heavy with your line...4-6 lb test to start assuming fresh water. Get smaller hooks like size 6-8 baitholder hooks and learn the basics with BAIT like nightcrawlers or meal worms. Once you get that down then you can move on to different techniques with various lures, styles, etc. I would target easy fish to catch like panfish or small bass fom the shore line...this can be a tough time of year to learn with the weather getting cold...but hang in till the spring and it will imporove...good luck!
