I was on state game bird hunting today (state land) and I wasn't sure where I was in relation to a safety zone (No signs were posted that I could see) and didn't unload my gun before walking into the zone. The game warden/ranger gave me a ticket. It is a manditory court date and there is no fine amount, apparently it is determined at the court. Antoher guy I was with got a ticket too. No one seems to worried about this, but I am freaking out. I never get tickets for anything... I am a new hunter and this is going into my second year. What can I expect from this? Do I need a lawyer? Is there anything I should do? Does anyone have any idea how much this will cost me? Thanks in advance for any help.

The wardens have been out in force this season. I've never seen so many guys cited . Shooting over roads, safety zone violations, stings etc... So if your planning on small gaming those wmas make sure all your ducks are in line .

Is your charge 23:4-16d(1) ? If so it is a civil penalty of NOT LESS than $100 and NOT MORE than $300. I hope this relaxes you some.
Yes, that is the citation.
Thanks guys for the help, I know those that some are joking, thank you also... lol. I am definetely respectful. I don't say anything. I have no problem paying the fine and I figured the lawyer would cost more then then the fine, but since I have no experience with this it it was a little scary. I was just a little suprised that its a manditory court date. I would prefer just mailing in a fine. This ranger didn't seem to happy. Maybe when I will go to court I will just explain the truth to them which is that primarily I am there to make sure from family members and friends that all the old guys I go with take their heart pills, insulin shots and if they hurt themselves call 911. If a bird jumps out in front of me that is just a bonus....
On a side note, We were at assunpink and I did see a lot of rangers. In the short time I have gone hunting every time. I always here shots in the dark and I always see guys shooting from places they shouldn't... In fact while the ranger was talking to us initially some guy started shooting almost from the parking lot and the pellets were hitting the trees above us and the ranger really wasn't happy after that, but even after they took this guys gun, I believe. and gave him some sort of tickets the guy didn't seem to upset. i was suprised he bothered with us after that...

All the people saying you need a lawyer an bashing my post, THINK ABOUT IT PEOPLE, its a simple fine, the cost of a lawyer will be more then the fine. My brother just went through this last year. All the lawyer fees were like $750 more then the fine. So if you people think paying for a 1, 500 lawyer is smarter then paying a couple hundred for a fine, then have at it...
