I think I clipped a hoof... he came in facing me so I flung one at him dead on and missed, he wheeled around giving me his ass to kiss so I flung another one at him as he sprung away I clipped a hoof, hes dropping massive amounts of blood. Think hes dead? :ko: SERIOUSLY FOLKS you guys in jersey actually have to take a bowhunter class before your allowed to bowhunt right? What is with all these poor shots? I understand it can happen but it should be so infrequent that its a myth... Practice Practice Practice..... Id love to see how often these guys wounding deer really practice during the course of a year...

I agree, sooner or later, given enough time in the woods, we will all make bad shots and lose animals, whether with a gun or a bow. But what puzzles me, and I'm sure some others, is how someone can come on the internet and ask for help from strangers, and then explain that they took a shot that nobody in their right mind would consider to be high success???[confused] Maybe they just don't know any better? Don't they teach what shots to take/not take in hunter education classes? The same goes for guys who shoot deer in the pouring rain and have no blood trail to follow, or who kill deer when the weather is in the 60s , then start asking around about butchers...[eyeroll]. Just think it out a little ahead of time boys & girls. I know that it gets boring, lonely, and cold sitting in a stand for hours on end...I get that. But all the wishing and hoping that the deer of a lifetime that just strolled into view will die a quick easy death if you send an arrow into him while he's facing you front-on or has his ass-end facing you is not going to work out well.[drinking]
NJ Hunter Ed was looking into a mentorship program that would allow you to hunt with a type of provisional license for X amount of time provided you were with a licensed hunter. I thought this was a great idea as new hunter of all ages would get real experience and knowledge from experienced hunters, but the program did not get the support it needed to move forward.
Many already do and the rest of the internet hunting judgemental police is never any the wiser
How do these guy's pass a hunter safty course?maybe the course has to be made tougher.Maybe N.J has to look how N.Y teaches their course.I was a N.J bow and gun insturctor,And you didn't get your card if i didn't think you belonged in the woods.I had those students come to my house to get private lessons.When they were goiod enough they got their card.Bash away.

The problem isn't just that they are newbies. Yes all are capable of a bad shot. This guys OP about the ass shot was nothing more than POOR JUDGMENT! It wasn't a good shot gone wrong, he obviously didn't have the patience or brains to wait for a better shot, or pass altogether.
Shooting a deer in the ass is just totally bad taste! So stop defending that idiot. Plenty of guys on here offer their help, when a person has made a bad shot, but at least those shots were taken broadside, not up the deers ass

There have been bad hits for as long as people have been bow hunting and gun hunting for that matter. Just now we have the internet to tell the whole world about it.
That aside. What the hell is with all the wacky posts lately. Seems people have allot of time on thier hands. It is hunting season right?

The answer is very simple. Griz. Sadly "the everyone gets a trophy" mentality has taken over hunter education in this state. My father had to go back and take his test during the summer because his card from 40 years ago was lost. I went with him just for the hell of it and saw people actually putting arrows into the dirt at 15 yards! I am not exaggerating this either. It was emabarassing. Those people stayed behind while everyone went up to take the test. Im sure they were given chance after chance and eventually passed and came up the hill. The posts Im seeing lately on hear are getting worse and worse. Practice, practice, practrice, and practice more! Tweak and know your equipment. Shoot all and any broadheads you plan to hunt with, mark yardages, or buy a range finder. You owe it to the animal to do this.
I may have been wrong, but I interpreted the OP's original post as a fabricated exageration to both extremes of some of the recent bad shots that have recently been made, not actual shots that he took, and thus my defense of and for some of the newbies asking for help recently.

Its a lot easier to pass with the xbows. Anyone can grab one that is sighted in and pass without putting in the practice time needed

That is just unreal. This is the point Im trying to make. Does anyone really practice? Practicing can tip the odds in favor of humanly killing a deer or posting on the internet about shooting a deer in the ass....

I was emphazising how ridiculous those type of shots are after repeated attempts by other members on other posts telling probably these very same people and all hunters to PRACTICE!!!! Learn deer anatomy!!!! Be Patient ETC... It gets to a point where every day were reading posts of "hit one but cant find it" Do any of these guys EVER read prior posts for any kind of help or suggestion whatsoever? Did they reach out to ANYONE before wounding game?

Grit just look at how many posts in the last 3 days have shown up here with wounded deer. You cant tell me that anyone who hunts and has a conscience isn't upset to see so much lost game. Its reached crisis mode! I agree with the practice practice practice concept. There are archery ranges all over that can be easily accessed. The rest who can put a target because their town has no "discharge laws" should be out there.
When I started hunting my dad was only small game. I relied on friends to help guide me in learning. I never took shots over 15 yds until I got comfortable. Now I'll take 30-40 max. Mostly closer to 30. I've made mistakes, had clean misses due to stupid shots. I learned and when I talked with my friends explained to me why it was stupid. Now I opt for broadside clean shots. It takes time, patients and practice to become a better outdoorsman. We all quickly forget the patients part whether taking bad shot or explaining a mistake. In order to continue a tradition that is on a decline in this state with younger people because there too busy fist pumping down the shore, we choose to judge instead of educate. I agree I can be frustrating but we were all once newbies. I'm still learning after all these yrs.

You're right about the crisis mode palawman, but how many of us have privately contacted any of these OP's and offered to help them out, start a hunting friendship that could lead to some type of mentorship, even if it's just conversations here and there asking about what they saw, have they practiced . . . are they having any issues that maybe we could help them through . . . I know I have, has anybody else ???

Yes, but you can lead a horse to water... I believe that most of the poor shots made are because the hunter just WON'T dicipline themselves to only take a clean shot. They are NOT going to let a good buck walk, instead they force rediculous shots hoping something magical will happen. Look at the case of Fasters lost deer, he states that if the deer got past him there would be no shot oppritunity, thus he let the arrow fly. Poor choice with no excuse. My son is 12, he had a slammer 8 within 15yrds this year but with no clean shot had to let it walk and didn't need me to tell him to do so. You may be right Grit, in some cases sugar gets more than salt. But some need a good kick in the ass and a bit of humiliation to really get them to think and act more maturely as my son did. If Faster had found his deer or someone with a dog helped him find it do you think he'd take that shot again? I do. I remember when Dad kicked my ass but hardly ever when Mom yelled.
