Having a few youngsters and working alternate schedules, it's tough finding time just for one of us to get out, no less both of us. I had been fortunate enough to get out on a few Saturday afternoons and already shot a couple doe for the freezer during the fall bow season. But my wife hadn't been out at all this year and a couple weeks ago she said she wanted to get out when she had time. So yesterday morning while getting ready for church, she asked me what time I was planning on going out. I told her, "actually, I was thinking you could go out and I'll stay back and watch the kids." After some discussion she agreed and with the wind direction I had the perfect stand picked out for her at my parent's place.
We got there around 2pm and I pulled off the gravel drive to get her set up in the stand. After making sure she was settled in, I left her with a radio and I headed up to the top end of the property where the house is. It was cold and windy most of the afternoon. I hadn't heard from her and really wanted to check in to make sure she was doing ok but I held off, figuring she'll call me if she needs anything. About 4:45, she finally comes over the radio, "I JUST SHOT A BUCK!" I normally keep it together pretty good when I'm on stand but immediately I started shaking! I was so excited for her! He came right up the trail I told her they would be coming from and she stopped him at 20 yards broadside. She thought she put a good hit on him and saw him crash down so I said I'd be down in a few minutes.
We got to tracking and 80 yards later, there he was piled up right next to an old blowdown. She was elated. She put a great shot on him, took out both lungs and he expired quickly. He's a 5 pointer, not the biggest rack but he's got a good body on him. Even this morning, she was still saying "I still can't believe I shot that buck!" I couldn't be happier for her.
