As we s l o w l y approach our first rifle predator season there are some things you should know. Many will be carring thier AR15's afield and amo is a concern. With the shortage of .223 and 5.56 hunters have had to buy what they could find. And Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) amo is in most AR owners gunsafes. It is the cheapest and eaisest to find amo out there. But for hunting this amo is a no no.

FMJ bullets are required amunition as per the Geneva Convention in warfare. They are the preferred bullets by the US military. The reason is they are designed to wound not kill. If a combatant is wounded it takes 2 to carry him and one to administer medical assistance. Hence four enemy are eliminated compared to one dead on the ground.

FMJ amo is notorious for richochet in .223. This is why Fish and Wikdlife made the law soft nose or hollow point only.

This is just a heads up. Save your FMJ's for shooting paper or for the Taly Ban when they land on Ortley Beach [hihi]

Is it January yet :ambivalence:

I reload slayer. 26.0gr of Varget and a 40gr Nosler Varmegeddon FBHP in my .223.

Many like the Hornady V Max. I just dunno if the plastic tip is considered legal or not. I guess it could be considered a soft tip. Maybe someone could ask F&W if these are legal. I really don't know how.

Good question Steve. Common sense tells me this should qualify as legal. But then again, this is New Jersey, where fun goes to die.

From Hornady's website describing the features of the V-Max bullet:

Features:

Polymer Tip
The polymer tip increases the ballistic coefficient and also initiates dramatic expansion upon impact – even at velocities as low as 1600 fps.

Higher Ballistic Coefficient
Hornady® combines the sharp, pointed polymer tip with the most aerodynamic profile for a high ballistic coefficient. The V-MAX™ profile also provides the maximum bearing surface for added in-flight stability
.
Swaged Lead Core
The swaging process allows for precise formation of the core up and around the tip, with a cavity under the tip's stem. This allows the tip to build up energy before smashing into the core, causing dramatic fragmentation of the core and jacket.

Precise Boattail & Flatbase Designs
Utilizing the proper base design provides incredible in-flight stability for long-range shooting

The new rules require the use of hollow point ammo for center fire rifles.
Not exactly.

Hollowpoints OR softpoint ammo is acceptable. FMJ is specifically prohibited.

Interestingly, Coyote & Fox Special Permit Season requires the use of "soft point or hollow point bullets" when using a centerfire rifle, but the same rifle used for woodchuck hunting can be loaded with "hollow point, soft point, or expanding lead core bullets".

Vmax bullets are definitely of an "expanding lead core" design, so they'd be legal for 'chucks but not 'yotes?!?!? This one will certainly require a call to the Division for clarification.

So you're saying you can now legally take your jersey legal AR w proper ammo and have at the yotes in NJ ? Wow this is great especially since it will take out the antis argument that AR's have no sporting purpose whatsoever.

I'll stick with my .243 Ruger M-77 with 80 grain PSP.
