A friend of mine owns two guns. Both were left to her when her husband died many years ago. One gun is a .357, and the other is a .22. She has all the original paperwork, and has since remarried.
They have been up in a closet locked away. She would like to start target shooting again. She does not have an FID card.
What does she need to do to carry these pistols to a range?
Thanks!

Transport it in the trunk in a locked case separate from ammo. Dont need FID to possess, only to buy firearms. Unless she has been convicted of a crime where "certain people not to possess firearms." Obviously she is not able to carry it on her persons, concealed or otherwise.

She will still need an FID card to purchase ammo for the pistols. Please inform her to get the FID card before heading to the range.
Just guessing, but the two handguns are probably old and can only assume they're revolvers. If they're quite old, be careful of the ammo you purchase and with the .357 you can use regular 38 ammo. Don't need the heavy stuff.

regular .38
ammo in a .357 would be an issue. Think you meant to say, .38 special in a .357 brother.

Regular 38 ammo CAN be used in a .357. But DO NOT use 357 ammo in a 38. It will blow it up. The cylinder is much stronger in a 357 and 38 ammo can be used in it.
Gotcha.

Or she can just buy her handgun ammo out of state and she's good to go. Definitely do not register those guns. Pointless if you dont have to.

How can you legally own an unregistered handgun in this state? A long gun yes, not a handgun. Isn't that why they're making all these laws? If it gets stolen and used in a crime I bet it will be a whole different story. and also who will be also blamed in the crime committed.

You can legally own a firearm in NJ in many ways without purchasing it with a NJ Hangun Permit to Purchase. Inheritance is one way, legally purchased while living in another state is another way.

NJ does NOT require registration of any firearm. Volunteer only.

And no, it's not why they are making all these laws. They are making laws for the sake of making it harder for legal gun ownership.

Many people in this state owned guns before you needed a permit to purchase a new gun. My father owns many that were bought before this law took effect. They are legally owned. If I inherited them they would still be legally owned. Would I voluntarily register them? Hell no! If they were stolen I would call the police and report them stolen as required by law. Good idea to jot the serial numbers down in a safe place should that happen. If they were stolen and I didn't report them and they were used in the commission of a crime they still wouldn't come back to me because I never registered them nor did my old man when he bought them, because it wasn't required then. Nor is it required for me to do so if they're left to me. The only way its illegal to inherit a gun is if your a felon and not permitted to own firearms.

There is NO LAW in this state that says "HANDGUNS MUST BE REGISTERED!" It's strictly "VOLUNTEER" if you so choose. Not one of my handguns are registered in this state or any other. All of them were bought in Florida and transported back here. ALL legal. Now lets say a weapon of mine got stolen. The first thing I'd do is report it to the police so that it's on record. This covers your butt should it ever be used in a crime plus if it's recovered they know who the owner is and can return it. You are not responsible if you had it recorded with the police. Case in point: Say your car gets stolen. And you had it locked up tighter than a gnats ass stretched over a rain barrel. You make a full police report. A week down the road, the dirtbag who stole it runs over and kills someone after a high speed police chase. Do you think you should be held responsible? I don't think so. And you say "ISN'T THAT WHY THEY'RE MAKING ALL THESE LAWS?" ALL of the present/future gun laws in this state are/will be made to take away your 2nd amendment rights. The liberals(democrats) would like to see the 2nd amendment totally abolished. They make these strict gun laws to keep YOU(not the God Damn criminal) in abeyance.

Anyone who KNOWS they will be inheriting firearms someday should save themselves any future headaches and make sure they get put into the writing of the will. Make a copy and keep in a safe place...problem solved, question answered
Many posts on here are very innacurate regarding firearms laws and only leads to speculation and panic

Should you be unsure due to the different answers you will get here, you can use the NJSP web site. You can also call NJSP firearms unit and ask them. And remember to document who you spoke to. JMHO
