Finally got my bird this morning after hunting these suckers for the past 5 weeks. Not entirely their fault; as I MISSED one A week, coulldn't get my gun off safe B week, when I had three gobblers standing in front of me at 45 feet. C week couldn't get one within 80 yards and last week they either went the other way or stayed out of range. Finally, this morning I figured I would try a spot where I had seen a gobbler and hen (with a beard) on this past Thursday night, while groundhog hunting. Set up by 4:30; at 4:55 had a gobble right where I figured he would be. Let him hit the ground about 100 yards out; gave a couple of calls and he started for the decoys. He gets within 70 yards and stops dead in his tracks. I caught sometime out the corner of my eye. Slowly turn my head, and what do I see coming across the field, but a damn COYOTE! Shit, there goes that gobbler, I think to my self. Wrong! The coyote (young) makes a wide circle around the decoys and tom, to my total amazement. I try to see where the tom is, unknown to me he had passed behind a small cedar tree, out of my view. I sat maybe another 2 minutes trying to figure out where he went, then he let out with a gobble and proceeded to head for the decoys.
