I'm going to call the chief tomorrow and ask him about it. Continue to discuss this too.

Why tip them off? I think your asking for trouble. Just my opinion but it's almost always better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

That's a load of shit. The OP claims to of done his due diligence and found no laws prohibiting what he wants to do, the setup is already there which would lead any rational thinker to believe that it's been done there before. That being said, why would you ask the police chief before you do it? I say shoot in a safe and responsible manner and enjoy. The chiefs say so on the matter doesn't matter an ounce if you have neighbors that are going to call the police and if your neighbors aren't that type than you don't need anyone's permission anyway. Don't give the chief any more authority than he really has.

Homeowner: "Hi Chief _______, this is __________ at _____________ just wanted to let you know that I'll be using the range on my land from time to time so if you get any calls about gunshots, no need to respond. I know that I'm within my rights when shooting on my own land."

Chief: "Ok."

Show me where I said "ask?"

I know your deal is that you're some hardcore libertarian badass but most of the time you just come off like a kid who got stuffed into one too many lockers in high school.

I'm not involved with anything libritarian and never been stuffed In a locker I just disagree entirely with what your saying. First off the police have an obligation to respond to a call of reported gun shots and second, I think you needlessly open a can of worms that doesn't need to be opened by asking or telling the chief of your intentions. If push comes to shove with the police or a neighbor over shooting on my own property ill let my attorney figure it out. That's what I pay him for.

If it were me I'd just talk to the neighbors and the cops ahead of time and work it out with a gentleman's agreement. No attorney fees or hassle needed, but it sounds like you enjoy that sort of thing which explains our difference of opinion on the subject.

No, but it does pertain the the fact that he has a range, which is regulated by fish and game
I don't think that's the case. Fish and Wildlife regulates public ranges, but they have no authority over what you do on private property with a firearm so long as it doesn't involve hunting.

Great thought BUT, There is no such thing as "No need to respond". Not for any first responders. BUT, maybe a call to the chief with no names or addresses and asking what the law is might be better.

I have to disagree to some extent. I know people who hunt in Parsippany. They can't tell you wether or not you can hunt your own property
Years ago when I lived in Parsippany I received a warning from the PD for shooting a bow in the back yard. Also the signs at the border entering the town has signs saying it is illegal to discharge a fire arm or cast an arrow. I realize it is self contradictory since there used to be a commercial clay bird range in the town, but it closed sometime in the early '90's

Here is what the Parsippany Code says

§ 162-1Discharge, firing and use prohibited. The discharge, firing or use of any gun, pistol, firearm or weapon of any description whatsoever at any place whatsoever in the Township is hereby specifically prohibited.

§ 162-2Use for sport, recreation and protection of property at discretion of Council. The Township Council may, upon proper application being made to the Township Council, give specific permission to a person for limited periods of time in certain places of the Township to discharge or use a gun, pistol, firearm or weapon in the Township for sport, recreation or the protection of property. The granting or denial of any permission under this section shall be in the complete and sole discretion of the Township Council.

"Weapon of any discription" includes a bow.

It does say you can get permission from the town council.....good luck with that

If you live in a town where they took the time to post a sign specifically stating you cannot discharge a firearm or cast an arrow then for sure they will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. Meaning.. FID card revocation and firearms used maybe sent into a forfeiture status. They enact those types of ordinances to preserve the safety and welfare of its citizens including but not limited to life and property. Of course, we all know of muncipalites where there is ample enough land to safely shoot a firearm or hunt, but still have no discharge laws in place. Simply put the citizens do not want to hear gunfire at any given time. Trying to get that amended is near to impossible here in New Jersey unless there is a quality of life issue ( deer moving into roadways more frequently than most other neighboring areas) etc etc
