BACK STORY: My wife and I just bought a new house in Galloway Township, Atlantic County. We are back in the rural area of town and I own 5.4 acres of land. The house actually came with a shooting bench, 50 yard range, and dirt pile back stop. Of course this gets me excited but before I just start cracking off rounds, I want to make sure that its legal. For all I know the previous owner could have been a rebel and cared nothing for the law.

FAST FORWARD: So I did a search on here and didn't find anything on actual laws. However I did find where someone said to check out eCode360. Anyway, I scoured my township ordinances and found nothing. I did multiple searches containing words like "firearms", "guns", "discharge", etc and got nothing pertaining to firearms on private property. In fact the only thing at all I found pertaining to firearms was in the Parks and Recreation section and also pertaining to special police officers.

So that brings me here to ask everyone. What do you think my next step should be? Is there any township or state laws that I am missing? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

1) Just fire off a couple rounds.. 2) wait for a few moments and listen for sirens.. 3) No sirens, repeat steps one and 2 untill coast appears to be clear ....4) if sirens are audible and closing in, secure weapon and haul a$$...[rofl]

Here is a link to check out the laws in your town. I don't know much about South Jersey, but many towns in Passaic; Bergen & Morris counties have "no discharge" laws. Some (Parsippany for one) it is even illegal to cast an arrow.

However you are probably ok where you are.
Yeah man that's exactly where I looked. From that link I went to Galloway Township Atlantic County. Then did the search of those words from there. Couldn't find anything. So I'm guessing I should be ok then. If anyone else that lives in this area would like to weigh in that would be most gracious.

I have to disagree to some extent. I know people who hunt in Parsippany. They can't tell you wether or not you can hunt your own property

Im not sure about the laws but im almost positive Galloway township does not have a no discharge law. I shoot on my property in Hamilton township when in a pinch and never had a problem. As long as you have a backstop and no houses close by I wouldnt worry. Good luck with the new land, let me know if you ever need help tracking or dragging

just because people get away with it doesn't mean it's legal. Parsippany does have a no discharge law that includes archery. I know people who have been cited for target shooting on thier own property in parsippany. Don't know if it stood in court. But the law is there (and should be overturned)

as far as the original topic, as long as there is not a no discharge law, and you feel it's safe on your 5 acres and the backstop is solid, have at it. Just be responsible

According to the lady from fish and game that I spoke with on this matter, she said that as long as you are within the laws for hunting, the town can't tell you what to do on your own private property. They only have say on township owned land.
