Hi out there. I've read a lot of posts and hasn't seen this exact question come up and was hoping anyone might have input. It seems like 50/50 either way but just wanted to get opinions.

So about a year ago I went to an outpatient clinic for alcohol counseling. I went for about 3 months and it was not court ordered. Should I declare this on my application? I've gone to other counseling prior to this as well but it was all voluntary and I have a completely clean record other than these possible issues.

Has anyone had a similar experience and if so how did they deal with it? I really appreciate the info and thank you in advance.

If you disclose that on your application you will be denied.

If you don't disclose it and they find it you will be denied.

Save your money and start bowhunting.

I'd speak with a gun attorney.

Question 26 pertains to an inpatient or outpatient treatment for mental illness while question 23 asks if you are an alcoholic. The attorney might say the legitimate answer to both questions is No but I am not an attorney, you need one.

makeing a false statement on a firearms application is a crime.. the above is VERY good advice. The web is alive with opinions, mostly bad ones and the ultimate responsibility (and criminal culpability) is yours. Get an attorney!

If you are a recovered alcoholic, you are specifically allowed to have a gun. Definitely speak to an attorney, because you only have one chance to get it right.

But don't despair. If you're truly sober, I think you should be OK.

Thanks for the help and advice. I have been sober now for over a year. I know that's not a long time and I can appreciate the idea behind not letting a alcoholic own a gun. I also feel that there should be a way that someone with a past dependency can show that they are competent to own a firearm.

I also don't want to lie on the application by any means. Also, I do not want to give uneccessary information that may be used against me.

So I gave Nappen a call for a consultation to see what his thoughts are. I will keep posting as this progresses, but if anyone has insight or wants to share their experience please do.

Thanks again.

.. Personally, I CAN NOT appreciate your appreciation for it... Drunks aren’t known for committing crimes with a fire arm... However, they ARE known for driving under the influence and killing people so, go head and get your FID card but please, stay away from motor vehicles until you are sure you don’t need a drink to cope with life.. With that said, just because you went to alcohol counseling DOES NOT mean you were ever an alcoholic so, as far as the FID app is concerned, >> MY << answer would be NO ….

Now excuse me, I have to go get a beer..
[hihi]

Alcohol problems have ruined my life so badly. I started drinking alcohol at the age of 23 and at the beginning I drank to relax. I also drank alcohol at parties. After that I started drinking alone and soon it became my habit and I just couldn't stop when I saw the bottle. Because of this, I gained extra pounds and my testosterone levels dropped significantly. I started using medications and I tracked my progress with the home testosterone test kit. I learned about quick testing and it is much more convenient than tests in a lab. Soon I completely got rid of addiction and became a full-fledged man again!
