So, like many hunters, I use a trailer hitch cargo rack on the back of my jeep during hunting season. My rack stays on the entire season and is still on now. A woman in my neighborhood just knocked on my door and asked for my insurance info and told me that she will sue me if I don't provide it. Apparently, yesterday morning she was pulling out of the parallel parking spot behind me and drove forwards, her bumper must have caught the rack and she hit it hard enough to get stuck, when she backed up it took part of her front bumper off. She says I am at fault because I don't have a flag or anything attached to the rack and that is illegal to leave the rack on the jeep like that. There's no way I'm at fault here is there? Isn't it the drivers responsibility before they get in the car to make sure they have enough clearance to get out.

You are right if she'd come bye and been neighborly this whole thing could of gone a completely other direction. People are so f-ing stupid these days and it seems no one teaches or learns any manners anymore I hope this issue is the end and that you and your neighbor can co-exist hopefully she learned a lesson. Next time maybe she'll think and choose to take the path of honesty or at least civility. Her crap/disrespectful additude with you and I a sure the police sealed her fate. Lucky for you she is taking the advice of some real winners and implicatd herself through her attempt to extort money for what i am sure would have been some BS repair estimate. Good move getting it all on record. You lucked out that the LEO just happened to be a brother of the stick and string.... Great story thanks for sharing it is good to see the good guys win one. [up]

Another update. Had a knock at the door early this morning. It was the woman's husband. I got mentally ready for round two. But! He had in his hand a check for a brand new hitch haul and apologized for the attack of last night, said wife was just upset over the amount of damage, cost, etc... The frame and the hitch are fine so I'm going to let sleeping dogs lay for now, but good to see the husband come over and do the right thing.

If there's more than $500 in combined damages it's illegal not to report it.
Wrong.
I would not have accepted the check and would have told him "I haven't had a chance for my mechanic to check out my vehicle yet."
By accepting the check you'll have a hard time now if you find out your frame was damaged.
