Well here's the major provisions of NY's new gun law:
1)expanded ban on "assault weapons" by broadening the definition of such firearms to include all semiautomatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military-style feature, as well as semiautomatic shotguns with one military-style feature regardless of capacity.
2) All sales and/or possession of such firearms as described in 1) above are banned. However, if you currently own one, you may keep it provided that you register the firearm with NY State. And it can never be transfered unless sold out of state.
3) All firearms sales in New York are required to be conducted through a dealer with complete background check and State registration. (with the exception of sales between immediate family members)
4) Background checks of ammunition buyers and automated alerts to law enforcement of high-volume purchases of over 100 rounds. (skeet shooters take notice)
5) Ammunition magazines are restricted to seven bullets, from the current 10, and current owners of higher-capacity magazines have a year to sell them out of state. There is NO GRANDFATHER PPROVISION in this law.
The only good thing to come of all of that is a provision that prohibits disclosure of the names in the new statewide gun-registration database, and would allow individuals to exempt their own names and addresses from being disclosed by counties that have such databases.
If I was a New York Gun Owner, I'm not sure what I'd do[eyeroll] Probably find a new place to live[wallmad]
