Pheasants foe ever needs to kick it up a notch and do some more work in NJ to bring back the native pheasant.. Meadowlands traps just ain't cutting it...
Are you a Pheasants forever member? Do you go to the meetings? Do you volunteer to help?
The point I'm making is that Pheasants forever is at all the expos begging people to sign up
Did you sign up?
But in reality not much is being done in NJ.
Have you been to any of the meetings? There are maybe 4-6 regulars that show up at those meetings. How do you expect those 4-6 guys to replenish an entire state population of birds.
UST READ an article yesterday that they have a couple of traps at the meadowlands to capture and relocate birds. There's gotta be a better way.
This program is the most cost effective way of doing things. Similar to how turkeys were re-populated. They are relocating birds from the Meadowlands in hope of getting a sustainable population in Six Mile. If that happens then we won't have to go through all of the hoops just to trap a few birds. It will take many years.
, my question is where are all the funds going???
Pheasants Forever is a national organization, I do not know what the NJ chapter brings in, and what they have to give to the national org. But I truly doubt there is a large amount of funds in the NJ kitty. Certainly not enough to plant the 30acres of grasses in six mile that they want.

Volunteering is not the problem
Really? Do you volunteer? Man power is a big problem, again 4-6 guys at the meetings

What they should do is release birds before the nesting season both quail and pheasants. I feel the 800 quail for the dog training is a waste, those birds could be released in before nesting season. I bet this would work obv with food and good nesting cover planted before. Then if this works then maybe yes roosters only obv they would still keep stocking on top of the possible wild birds.

The pheasant & Quail stocking program is a put & take program. This means the birds are stocked one day and to be shot in the next couple of days. The birds are not able to survive in the wild for long mostly do to predation owles, hawks, foxes, coyotes, & the worst- ferrel cats. Ferell cats & house cats have destroyed the wild quail population here in SJ. Housing developments don't help much either.

i see birds that make it through every year. as far as ferrel cats idk where you live but i haven't seen any where i'm at in cumberland county. we release a pile of quail every year to help repopulate but 8 out of 10 die off during the winter. if you want to help you can call steve from the s.jersey quail restoration project to get involved his # is 856-451-5338 or 609-364-4990. we meet once a month in laurel lake all help is welcome. get involved all help is welcome.
