Thank for the tip JD, i figured berkshire valley is the closest to me so I'll check that out. i'm also going to look into the newark watershed.

68nova, yes I went to NJIT I'm assuming you also went there?

I did take the hunter education course but I only did the shotgun not the muzzleloader or bow.

Well... IDK if its worth it to spend the money on a hunting license for this year. You already missed 6 day and have nowhere to go yet. If I were you I would get a 2013 Resident Firearm Hunting License and a permit shotgun deer permit. Get out this weekend and scout a spot for 2013 deer hunting. You will only be able to hunt land that is in zones that are governed by regulation sets 4, 6, or 8. That gives you 2-3 weeks in January 2013 to hunt whitetail. If it were me, I would be taking some time off work to get on the deer. I would be hunting like every other day, monday, wed, friday, saturday in January. After the deer season is over, you can still get out and hunt small game like squirrels, rabbits, etc with just your 2013 firearm permit out through like the middle of Feb. That is PRIME TIME to keep your eyes open for tracks in the snow. Take a month off and you're right into spring turkey [up] By getting out in the woods on land you plan on hunting again you will learn a great deal of information that will help you out so much for next year. I promise even if this year looks like a bust, get out there and you will be much better off next season. Besides it'll give you something to look forward to all summer while you are drinking 6 packs and swinging fishing poles :D

Start making plans to get a bow too if you really want to get some deer. Make a trip down to an archery place and at least scope it out. I popped 5 deer this year with a bow.

Here is an oppertunity for someone to help a new hunter out and get him started in the right direction. I am a bit of a ride from you ek54 but I am sure someone local to you will offer to help you get started. Lotta great guys and gals on here.

Welcome to the sport and the site. [up]

I use a smooth bore shotgun with buck shot so I'm assuming I don't need to get it sighted. I have been going to the shooting range to practice my aim.

thanks for the heads up JD.

thanks for the welcome everyone

Welcome to the site. Ballbusting aside, you can learn a lot here, some great folks.

welcome to the site and to a world of your primitive spirit and instincts. breathe the crisp air, hear the field mouse scurry through the grass, see the breathe of the animals, smell the pine needles as the scent is dispersed through the air from underneath the paw of the black bear, become in tune with nature and your destiny will be fullfilled
Man that must be some good chit man [smoke]
