Hi guys, I am new to the site just found it recently.
I took an interest in hunting recently and got all my licenses but I've never hunted before for deer. I'm a 25 year old engineer that simple wants to learn how to hunt. I personally don't know anyone who hunts, does anyone need or want me to tag along? I live in the Newark area.

welcome to the site and to a world of your primitive spirit and instincts. breathe the crisp air, hear the field mouse scurry through the grass, see the breathe of the animals, smell the pine needles as the scent is dispersed through the air from underneath the paw of the black bear, become in tune with nature and your destiny will be fullfilled;)

what kinda hunting do you plan on doing? Bow, muzzleloader, shotgun? Where do you want to hunt? Do you have cold weather gear good enough for sitting like 4-5 hours in sub-freezing temps?

is the Newark watershed a private area? I don't want to get arrested for trespassing with a firearm, cops will throw me in jail and lose the keys

FunNGuns: did you come up with that, pretty poetic.

stevo2012: I don't know any hunters that why I'm on this site :D
are there any clubs in the North NJ area any of you guys would recommend?

I'd like to do some deer hunting, possibly try turkey in the spring if I can the hang of things. I just have a firearm permit and own a shot gun, I don't know how to use a bow so I won't be doing any bow hunting.

Chances are living in Newark, you will be driving a ways to your hunting land. If we are lucky it will snow this winter. It provides an excellent opportunity to track deer movements. A good first step would be to find an area to hunt and just head out and walk. Look for signs of deer. If you see paths that are heavily used, then look for a tree you could run a climber up nearby and you have officially "found a spot". Next step would be to get to that spot before daybreak/dusk, put a climbing stand up it, and wait.

I'm not trying to deter you, but there is a high chance you will not get a deer this season. Its just late in the season and you have no experience. Not to worry though! You can use the next few months as valuable experience for next season. Lets say you are in your spot and you see some deer. Awesome! But they are out of range, heading the other way, or something. Well take the opportunity to see where they came from, where they are going, why you think they would be walking there, etc. Maybe find a new tree closer to the area you did see deer. You have officially "found a better spot"!

Repeat until you are slaying deer like Ted Nugent!

I would also take serious consideration into getting a bow, at least a crossbow. Your chances next year of seeing deer and having a shot at quality deer are greatly improved as you can get out hunting much earlier. Not only that, once you actually do get a deer with a bow you'll be hooked. Its awesome!

And don't let the jokers on here deter from hunting. Its obvious you want to learn...not easy to come to a site full of hunters and say "HEY IM NEW!". There's lots of good information on this site already, youtube, tv, etc. Just start soaking it in, spend time in the woods, and you'll do just fine [up]

ah yes... i thought he said he had his firearm license... but it appears like only a FID. Do yourself a favor and take all three tests at once. You dont need any muzzleloader experience, but you do need your own bow and have to put 3 out of 5 arrows in the vitals at like 15 to 20 yards.
