As a retired police officer I think the Blaze Hunter safety Orange patch the NJ co's carry in theyre pocket should NOT be allowed to determine if your blaze orange is correct. That patch does not brush up against butrnt trees, weeds, schrubs and does get dirty. All I see is another money maker here. I guess one should goout and buy gun clothing every year ! NJ Federation of Sportsmen Clubs whats your stand on a patch that determines if you get a summons or not ?

Personally, I interpret the 200 sq inches rules as 200 sq inches now. Not when your clothes were fresh.

Who cares what they used to look like. It's what you're wearing today that will or won't protect you.

200 sq inches isn't much. As long as you're wearing a reasonable amount of orange, a little mud or tears shouldn't bring you below the minimum.

I agree, take a new patch carry it in your pocket safe from rain, sun fade, briars, burnt trees, blood, etc, and want mine to match up is a little unreasonable.

they carry it so guys cant wear "orange" that may as well be brown. i have seen some people wear orange that was hardly distinguishable against the rest of the camoflauge they are wearing. the co's are trying to keep everyone safe so we can continue to enjoy our sport without more oposition from the antis saying it is unsafe. the law is the law and if you dont like it stick to bow hunting

When did they start doing this ?
I have seen this done in other States but not in NJ.

The digest states " 200 square inches of fluorescent orange material".

This seems very subjective on the enforcement end.

You can buy orange hats and vests from different vendors and they are signifigantly different colors of orange.
However BOTH should meet the hunter orange requirement.

Don't need 200 inches if you have a solid hat.and it does say hunter orange.

All hunters with firearms for deer, rabbit, hare, squirrel, fox of game birds must wear a cap of solid Hunter Orange or other outer garment with at least 200 square inches of Hunter Orange visible from all sides. (Exception: waterfowl, wild turkey and bow hunters.)

yeah I got my hunter orange hat from 1969 which has been washed 600 times and looks more like dirt than hunter orange [down][down]

A brand new hunter orange baseball cap or winter hat is like less than $10.

Spend $10 every couple years - vs - not being seen and getting shot.

This is a no brainer. I wear an orange hat if Im gonna be in a stand. I wear a ridiculously large orange vest and a orange hat if im gonna be on the ground walking around, or dragging a deer during gun season.
