I haven't done much gun hunting and getting ready for 6 day after a few years not gun hunting. I have a h&r ultra slug hunter and though this hasn't come up in the past is there a way to release the hammer without firing a shot or damaging the firing pin?

I figure if I see a deer cock it and then can't get a shot or turn it down can I unload and uncock the gun without firing? Could I unload the live round and put a spent shell in the gun and pull the trigger without damaging it? Thanks for your help

Just keep pressure on the hammer holding it cocked and then pull the trigger and then release the hammer down to the uncocked position. Try this about 100 times before trying it with a live round in it. You will see how easy it is after a few tries and you will be good to go.

Good luck!

So f u have a live round in and u are letting down on the hammer and your finger slips will it go off do u think?

yes it will go off if it strikes the firing pin hard enough. Many years ago my friend was hunting with a lever action .35 rem in NY, he went to let the hammer down slowly and it slipped, gun went off

When we get kids on the line at Hunter Safety with a single barrel, the first thing I make them do, is release the hammer 3-4 times, without a round. If they can't do it, I won't pass them.

They have a transfer bar in them that only stays up if you hold the trigger. The transfer bar is the only way the firing pin can be driven by the hammer, but as always you still need to practice dilligent gun safety in decocking it. Basically what you need to do is put you thumb on the hammer, squeeze the trigger and release it allowing the hammer to unlock then carefully lower the hammer. The best bet is to practice with it unloaded as was stated by NJIllinoishunter.

H&R are tack drivers. I always use mine during shotgun. Pop out live round and release hammer slooowllyy. Easy to do.

When you do fire it though, be assured it will hit exactly where you aim...
