It is not okay to shoot a bow or crossbow until you check your local town ordinances or with your local PD. It is disallowed in many towns.

I shoot in my backyard as well as many of my friend's yards. Just be smart. I have no neighbors behind me for 3,500 acres. Just woods. Plus, I put my targets in front of my wood pile. So in the event my sights are off, I should just hit the logs.

What is the legal definition of "discharge"? I've never heard ther term applied to a bow. I discharged my bow? May be a loop there. Get a copy of the ordinence and read it.

No discharge laws are suppose to be put in place to protect the citizens and their property from damage from a firearm. Read your ordinance carefully. Technically a firearm in New Jersey does not legally include a bow and arrow. However sometimes the wording is tricky stating that " ANY PROJECTILE" could be considered dangerous and thereforea firearm. ( So could a baseball after being hit by a baseball bat ***)

Anywho if your neighbors don't care you shouldn't have a problem. Just be safe no-matter how you figure it.

TS>.... Discharge means to be caused to fired or used. Like for example: I was discharged from the hospital yesterday... This means I was released. Just like when you fire a gun or bow and arrow something you did caused it to be released by your own will power. The gun just didn't fire itself. However this can happen causing a accidental firearm discharge. Some police officers who are irresponsible or just a act of god have their weapons fired for no reason.

Guys everyone loves to shoot, be smart! You have neighbors, kids, Pets and whatever else. Punch a release, cracked nock anything goes wrong not good. Please go to the woods, wma or range to shoot. Keep the wrong eyes off our sport!!!! Happy shooting and hunting, good luck to all and have a safe season.

Newark/Bloomfield PD should be worried about other sh#$% then a guy with bow taking shooting practice!
Not too many places in Newark or Bloomfield that have the space to safely shoot. While I wholeheartedly feel that the government should stay out of our business (and not enact so many stupid laws), I can see why those towns have a no discharge law. Got any ranges near you?
