I took my son out hunting for the first time of the season on Monday afternoon. We get in the blind at around 4:30 and get settled in for a while then we had two button bucks run 20 yards form us out to the field and out of site. Shortly after we have a nice 8pt come past us at around 40 yards and head out to the field. So we wait and wait then we have four small bucks coming in and the boy is ready to take a shot at a 4pt at 15 yards and the wind swirled and we were done. I was crushed but tried to explain to him that these thing happen when hunting and no matter how much you prepare for the season there’s nothing you can do about the wind swirling and that if you’re going to hunt you’re going to go through things like this but in the end it’s things like this that make it that much better when you kill one. Yesterday afternoon we headed back to the same ground blind running a little bit late. We got settled in a little after five and didn’t sit there for more than 20 minutes and he says dad I see deer coming and before I knew it there was three deer standing 10 yards in front of us and I’m so nervous I can’t breathe… The boy shoots and makes a good shot and to hear the excitement in his voice as he say dad, “I got it I got it” is something I will never forget. We get out of the blind and find his arrow with good blood on it then he says dad I want to track it by myself so we find the first blood and away he goes and after 40 short yards he says I see it and sure enough it was laying only 50 yards from the blind! This was by far the best hunt in my life and no matter where I go or how big the bucks are that I kill for the rest of my life, this will be the hunt I always remember.
