It seems every time I go there I manage to run into some real winners. And every time I swear I won't go back, but the convenience seems to win out every time (it's less than a mile from my parents' house...I grew up shooting there when there was nothing more than a picnic table for a bench).

It seems that every time I'm there somebody goes downrange without even checking to make sure the range is safe. I don't know whether they assume my flintlock is not loaded or that I will see them. Or maybe they think it's not a real gun? I just don't get it.

This morning was no different. I had been there about an hour and a half when 2 cars pulled in. Three adults and a teenager got out and one of the adults immediately headed downrange without even acknowledging that I was there. Fortunately, I was finishing up and just running a couple of patches down the bore. However, my son was at the bench right alongside me with his .22 rifle. He was just about to insert a loaded magazine when he saw the guy walking downrange. My son put his gun down and stepped away from the bench.

I noticed that the guy downrange was placing 2 spinner-type targets on top of the 25-yard berm. I politely pointed out to the others in the group that those targets are only supposed to be placed at the BASE of the 25-yard berm. They called out to the guy downrange to put the targets at the base of the berm. Since it was POURING, he couldn't hear them, so he came back to the bench. I pointed out that spinner targets need to be placed only at the base of the 25-yard berm to help prevent ricochets. I went on to explain that bullets can be heard whistling over the office, and are often found on the shore of the reservoir. He started giving me a hard time saying that the back berm is high enough to catch any ricochets. Rather than get into an argument, I pointed him to the LARGE sign with the rules for target placement. As I was loading up, I noticed that he had placed one of the targets at the base of the 25-yard berm, but the other was halfway between the 25- and 50-yard berms on the hard-packed shale.

I thought about making a call to the CO, but I really didn't want to be a prick. However, I wish people would learn that the rules are in place for a reason. The last thing I want is for someone to get hurt because somebody else wasn't following the rules. And I'd sure hate to be the guy out fishing who happens to catch one of those ricochets.

You did the right thing. If he inadvertently sent one towards the reservoir and hit someone, and you didn't say anything.....the guilt would eat you up. I get annoyed at the people who leave it a mess after shooting...shells, cardboard, soda cans, etc.

Used to go there alot more; but every time I asked someone to pick-up their TV boxes and real-estate signs, I would get the old "I'm leaving it here for the next guy to use".
When asking someone to pick-up their spent shells, I would get "I don't reload, so I'm leaving them here for someone who does".
The place was a dangerous dump of a range, and I hear that it was re-done and looks nice now.
Hope it lasts, but can't see it staying that way past NJ firearms season.

I've seen some unbelievable stuff at ranges... probably the most notable was at ft dix when a guy started strolling down the rifle range in the middle of live fire. he got about 20 yards before I noticed and started SCREAMING at him. The RSO came down and was like nose to nose screaming at this dude. IDK how he did not get thown out. The RSO was drawing a line in the dirt with his boot at the fire line [hihi][hihi]

Lots of newbies shoot one bullet and turn around laughing/smiling at thier friends. Of course they have terrible safety behavior so their finger is on the trigger and they sweep half the range with the loaded muzzle. Thats a good way to kill someone... [spy]

not cleaning up garbage is just plain lazy and disrespectful.

A friend was shooting on a range when a guy came through on a dirt bike. my friend finally got him stopped and said "I want to appologized to you", the rider asked why, he said because I'm shooting here and if I hit you I may not be able to appologize later. The biker promtly left the area.

How about the guy that has his son stand next to the 75 yd target because he cant see where his bullets are hitting

[wallmad][wallmad][wallmad]

I cant believe no one has been seriously hurt there yet

I've never witnessed this at Clinton. I go once every few months. Guys usually communicate well, ask the others if it's a good time to change out targets, and call out their intentions.

It's always the few jerks that ruin it for the rest (as with every thing), so I always wear an orange blaze hat or vest to make sure I'm seen down range when changing out targets. Stay safe.

I was at the Clinton skeet range last year and some jackass ran out to collect clays that hadn't broken. He didn't even say anything to the rest of the shooters, just ran out with his head ducked down picking up clays while everyone else stopped and watched.

Acard, you're right. Most of the people that shoot there regularly are OK. I just always seem to run into idiots that must think they're bulletproof. I go there about once a week, so I guess the odds of me running into them is higher than most.

Maybe it's because I actually use the loading bench...people see me there and think I'm just cleaning up or something. Maybe they don't understand that if ANYBODY is touching a firearm for ANY REASON, the range is NOT SAFE.

The benches behind the firing line are there for loading muzzleloaders, not storing your junk. It drives me absolutely nuts when I see guys loading at the firing line. [mad] [mad] [mad]

fyrfyter my mom lives about a mile from the range also i was at her house this morning and could hear you shooting

You should have called a co people like that shouldnt be allowed people that are inconsiderate to the safety of others shouldnt be allowed imo

I load up magazines when people are down range... of course I'm back behind the safety line with mags and rounds only... guns are at the line on the table action open with a flag in em.

people messin with stuff at the table for ANY reason while its cold is no good.
