Without looking at the location we average 6 to 7,000 for that unit. And that is soup to nuts. If it is a long gas line run it may be a little more. We also hold the service contract with Generac in our territory.

Not sure if it is avaliable on 10kw unit but a LOAD SHED transfer switch will allow the gen to run the whole house..... Till you over do it then shed the load to the selected circuts. Just installed one abt 6 months ago and it is amazing

That's funny I'm gas piping one right now for someone. I'll try to find out from the electrician what he charged for it. I think its 10 000 kw.
What was said above is true about the gas. More than likely the gas line you have now is not big enough to handle the increased load of the generator. You will need to run a dedicated gas line from the point of delivery. That being the gas meter or propane regulator.

I looking to get a 8000w portable that will get me through the day. Plenty for sump, freezer, tv and misc. I have a gas heat stove so no probs. I was looking into one of those but for the amount of times I'll actually need it, I'll get by![up]

Jersey, Look into the manual transfer switch also. That way you don't have extension cords running everywhere. Where are you located, I'll give you a price on the portable and manual transfer switch.

TJC...You can power a limited number of circuits depending on the generator size. When tied into the panel, depending on the unit....you can power individual circuits if needed by simply switching off your breakears and energizing only what you need. On newer homes for example, many times the fridge will be on its own circuit, and each bedroom will as well. Older homes sometimes power almost a full floor, other then the bathrooms on a single circuit.

Sounds like a lot of money and effort for the few outages we have.Yes some did experience prolong problems recently but a potable generator connected to propane or natural gas could have done the job. After all we dont live on a mountain top in Montana.14k is a hell of a lot of power.

What would be the smallest you guys would go? Anyone on the site that would like to do my house p.m. me. I'm in Essex County.

My brother owns his own electrical company and is a Generac dealer. He's out of livingston and does all of central and north jersey. Paris Electric, PM me if interested and ill give you his # if you're interested.
Before the storm hit I ordered a generac Propane 14kw with the 200 Amp panel and smartswitch, I bought the 500 gallon tank outright cause they wanted to charge $85 per month rental fee plus would charge me $4.00 a gallon cause I didn't have my whole house on prop- crooks! Anyway, its being installed next week

I would NOT be without the unit I got. Never again. It is a small price to pay for normalcy.
Plus, I have a whole lot of Hides, Skulls, and animals of many members here, spread out in 4 freezers in my shop. They are top priority to me.

Kohlers have better reps these days than Generac, and when I ran an estimate for my 3200 sf house with everything running, I needed a 14kw. 14kw Kohler w/200 amp transfer switch package can be found numerous places online for about $3900 incl free delivery.

Figure $1500-2000 for the electrician, depending on the complexity of your needed setup.
