Some old deer in Barnegat. (pics)

The Union County Federation just got the results back from the teeth that were collected from the last season. I would have taken more pictures of the animals if I had know they were this old.
There were 3 deer running together and all were harvested.

This one was determined to be 12.5 years old. [eek]

The one in the foreground was aged to 7.5 and the one in the background 1.5.

Shot a doe in Bass River State Forest , she aged out at 11 1/2. The oldest deer killed in NJ was tagged as a fawn and killed 18 years later.

It's the easiest way to get them out when your in the woods 1/2 a mile to a mile. No trails, lots of swamp and sticker bushes and fallen trees. It's a hell of a drag.

We were amazed that these deer were that old[eek]
The division has a pretty great program for deer aging. Extract a tooth, put it into a supplied envelope, get it to a biologist...and the results are posted within a couple of months.
Out of the 25 teeth the Union County Federation submitted, the Barnegat girls were the oldest!

I think the boys will pull the teeth without me next year. They loved the information.

Using the teeth gives you a definite age, the tooth is cross sectioned in a lab. No wondering or guessing. Besides I never would have guessed 12.5.
