Finally, I pulled together a fish and got good pics of it. I missed 5 other fish. They were rainbows, the stream is not stocked there but they do stock about +/- a 1/2 mile away. Could the fish have swam that far up stream?

Anyway, got a beautful rainbow on a #14 pheasant tail perfect hook. About a 10 incher.

Good Luck

With all this rain the fish absolutely could have swam that far from the stocking point. Beautiful fish congrats. After all the rain we have gotten I'm sure the deleware is loaded with trout

Wild trout usually brookies.
This is not necessarily true. It all depends on where you are fishing. There are steams that hold just brookies, or just browns or just rainbows. There are also streams that hold two or all three species of trout.

There are at the least a dozen streams in NJ with 'wild' (born in the stream. *note - this does not mean 'native', indigenous or 'heritage' rather descendants of those stocked - by whomever, whenever, however) rainbows (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Any over 12" are trophies but they can range up to 18"+. I have hundreds of pics. and verifications of many pops. via electroshocking by former NJF&W biologoists. So, they are around and not as rare as most think. Unstocked, tough to access (not illegal) high gradient, high PH streams are the key(s) to finding them. *Note -Some populations are not consistent due to environmental variables.

Looks like a stocked fish. What are the stream temps. If above 72 you might as well keep them as they will die after letting them go although they look healthy and strong. Lactic acid will build up in their body from even a short easy fight. Either don't fish for trout or keep the ones you catch. This time of year stick to warm water species with the fly rod.
