Had a strange encounter last night. Had 2 does come in followed by a grunting spike buck. The spike had 12 inch spikes. Thinking this was not good for the gene pool I decided to use my buck tag. I have let so many bucks walk this year waiting for the 4 year plus. It was 4:15 when I was about to draw when I heard something coming from the same direction these deer came from. Thinking that one of the does might be hot and a shooter buck could be dogging her I waited. The original 3 hearing the racket left in a hurry. All of a sudden I see 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 yotes. They stop and start howling 60 yards from my stand. Another group started howling back about 150 yards away and a third group from about a 1/2 mile. I threw an arrow their way to scare them off but they just sniffed the spot the arrow hit. It’s now getting dark and they were at the beginning of my trail out. I gave a yell and they looked at me and trotted away but stopped after 20 seconds or so. I couldn’t see them but the wind died down at sunset and I could hear them rustling in the leaves but not moving away, still around 70/80 yards or so from me. I climbed down and made a wide circle to my trail out. I have been hunting this area for 6 years and I often hear them but only spotted a single one a few years ago. Seemed strange they didn’t haul ass like a deer when I yelled. Seems like it’s time to get a hunt underway. Has anyone had any other run-ins with a pack?

What zone?

I have never seen any during the day, but I am not a NJ deer hunter...yet (that should change this Saturday:)).

The wind was howling all day yesterday, and the front came in before that. I guess it was time to eat.

I don't know Zone 16, all that well. I know there's a permit shotgun season...so shotguns are allowed. I just don't know that area.

And permit started last night. But it was the first day back to work and school for my little one. Hopefully I'll be out there soon!

I always see them during daytime. Those 8 were probubly heading right for my place. I have only seen one from my stand. That was at 3:30pm. The rest were circling the chicken coop. Some midday.

Oh yea I am in z16. Yote hunters need to hunt 16. It is loaded. Come get em guys. I bet Turkey Swamp would keep you busy all season.

Got about a dozen running around cedar lake wma. See them running around a few times during the day. Oh yeah and as for them not running that's the pack mentality 8 to 1 the odds are in there favor until one is injured the flight instict many times doesn't kick in if you would have tried to chase them or stalk them they very well would have put your backside opn their menu

In most other states besides NJ isnt yotes fair game and can be taken without permit??
Permit Coyote is for night hunting, with shot larger then #4.
Coyotes and foxes can be taken during deer hunting, its called Incidental Hunting, with a valid deer transportation tag. i.e. not specifically going for yote as a small game species.

in 6 years of using trail cams I only have a few pics during daylight of them, many more at night. I am heading out the week after next at night to call and blast before they get a chance to eat next years batch of turkeys and deer. Going with my trapper who is supposedly one helluva caller. Will go with him a night or two, learn from him, then be set to go on my own. No sense going and trying before that, only end up educating them dogs.
