Asking someone else to pick a "deer rifle" for you is like asking someone else to pick a girl for you to marry.

Lots of good ones out there, but you gotta find the one that's right for you. [up]

The Remington 700...great gun and s million after market and up grades on the market for it

Im just looking for advice on the caliber

Depending on who you ask, "deer calibers" usually begin with the .243/6mm & continue up to the .300 magnums. That's a lot of ground to cover, so it's best to narrow down the size of deer you expect to encounter as well as the type of terrain, and shooting distances you'll likely face.

Plains deer in Kansas might dictate a different choice in rifle/caliber than the backwoods of Alabama, where shooting distances are often measured in feet - not yards.

Where are you planning on hunting? Long distance field shots, I'd go with a flat shooter .270, 6mm,7mm. If your gonna be hunting brush, you can't beat.35 or 30-30. I hunt in the mountains of WV every year. I will take the 30-30 if hunting the thck brush of the lowlands. When I hunt up top, I use the 30.06 or .308. Last year we clear cut some of the property, alot of shots 300yrds plus. Wish I had picked up 7mm mag in the off season, had to pass on a nice 8 pointer

Just for deer, 7mm-08 or 308
For all round 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag
if you are going custom 280 AI or 300 perfect.
Rem 700 BDL or Savage 116 on the rifle.
Just my opinions.. Do your homework. SHoot lots of your bud's rifles and such, handle alot of rifles before you buy..
If you go with a 700 make sure its bdl or better quality, stay away from the walmart adl's..

Mostly open agriculture and hardwoods. I anticipate the shots to be less than 100 yards but I would like to be able to shoot 200 if the oppurtunity offers itself.

And spend the extra for a good quality Leupold or other top brand scope, it will pay huge dividends when the time for that shot comes
for sure I just bought a savage 220 this year and I put a leupold vx-3 2-8 on the gun. I could not belive how clear the scope was and how wel the scope peformed in low light. On top of that with the rain and the fog and all of the crap this week the scope performed better than i could have imagined. Didnt shoot anything lol but spent a lot of time looking at mediocre bucks.....
