Started archery and hunting when I was 12 in PA, and ended due to 'life' in early 20's. Last year my son at 12 says out of the blue, "can I try archery?" - YES! We did a bunch of 3D shoots the last year, practiced a lot, and just past the hunter safety in early October.
We headed out on 11/11, for an afternoon (after soccer ended) and sat for a while. No tree stands yet so we are ground hunting. Nothing happening, so I decided to go out and try and push for my son. Slowly climbed a good sized hill, and at the top I see two does about 40 yards away, wind in my favor for a change. Took about 15-20 mintues to work my way tree to tree to about 25 yards away. The larger of the two comes slowly walking right at me, and stops about 10yrds away, sensing something wasn't right, turns and runs about 20 yards away. After about 10 minutes, relaxes, and lays down to eat behind some small scrub trees.
I waited behind the big tree another 15-20 mintues, and it finally gets up and starts to mosey towards me, walks behind a big tree, I drew back, took a big breath, and when it came out the other side at about 18yards, released. Hit right behind the shoulder, bounded away.
Waited a bit till my son came up and he wanted to help track it. We walked about 25 yards and he yells "its right here!" Arrow went into the back portion if the shoulder and into the vitals.
Years of hunting from the ground and I finally succeed. Now trying to teach my son how to walk super slow and quiet. He's really to get his first this year.
Sorry pic is so bad - blackberry picture and setting was on low. (have to get a camera for the hunting backpack)
