Explain yourself without the use of special dog with a Permit #131. Or is that your answer.
As long as the handler has a permit for the specific county in NJ he is legal. I used one this year and the guy came from PA. He would not traveled an hour each way if you couldn't legally track a wounded deer. If fact, they do not allow it in his home state. Securing permission on privated property should the deer have traveled across the property line could potentially be the issue.

WOW that would have made a differance tracking is tough shit.
You tip a waiter don't you and they never fall in creeks trip over loggs get up at midnight, pull 100's of multiflora thorns from their body and lsten to crap like "I took that kind of shot because he was big".
TIps we got from 20 to 100 most times $0.
I think @ $250- they will be only tracking EAB does and 120" and up bucks.
VERY sad what the politisions associated with the NJ DEP have done to this program if this is true but hey NOTHING surprises me with this state anymore.

Everyone seems divided on this issue of using a dog to track a wounded deer. The user Broadhead hit it on the "HEAD" (no pun intended) when he said as long as the handler & dog have a permit for the county and state. They also make sure you have permission to track the deer if it leaves your property. They will not track unless you have permission. This is a process to collect data to prove that this works to recover wounded and only wounded deer. The original law which was enacted over 50yrs ago stated, "it is illegal to use a dog to hunt and track deer". The state along w/ Fish and game modified the law to state "you can use a dog to track wounded deer", w/ the contingency that the dog and handler is certified. Now w/ 13 handlers they are compiling data to prove it works.

The whole deal pisses me off. I woul be happy to get Gunny a permit, test him, no prob. And it is HARD work! Probably worth $250, but some may do it because they like it, the dog LOVES it, and a tip and gas is cool. But who would pay $250 unless your talking a monster? But that doe or skippy for a meat hunter? They deserve the same. Respect the deer, retrieve it, or do your best to try. I have come across some sad stuff shed hunting. Respect the deer or just don't take the shot. Everyone has a bad shot, but track it best you can at least.
What exactly harm is done by doing that with a dog, a useful tool to do what is right? What is the downside? Where is the harm? All I see is a good side to it!
Am I missing something other than the state looking for a way to put more fees by registering dogs?

It has been prove for hundreds of years it works.
NJ SCREWS us on fees. Fall bow, permit bow, winter bow, buck tags....this is a trail to new fees.
You watch...the state will charge dog owners a testing fee...then a yearly or worse a dog registering fee for each season described above.
Perhaps a yearly re-testing fee.
All this will cost the "Registered Dog and handler tracker" at least a couple hundred dollars a year to be legally allow their dog to help out their buddies and allow their dog what they love to do.
Therefore, the legal dog and handler must charge their buddy a fee to cover their costs.
The hunter won't pay for that except for trophy bucks, and the handler won't track a skippy or doe on public land for fear and cost of the tracking tags and registration that will be required so respect for the animal goes out the window.
It is coming, and I for one say its bullshit. It may be time to expose this in the media, I have legislative connections that I will talk to if there is enough of an outroar from hunters.
