Mentioned to my wife today I wanted to get another dog expecting to get a resounding no from her. To my utter surprise she didn't pitch a fit (other than making me go get the new Iphone for her). So now I'm looking at getting a Braque francais which is french pointing dog. Never trained a gun dog so I really don't know spit about it, but would love to try. Anyone got any suggestions or pointers?:)

Here is my take (and there are those here who may know better). The Braque francais are "delicate" dogs who are very affectionate but very sensitive. If you raise your voice, it will cower. They may take a little more training time for one whose never trained because most training methods are too harsh for the breed. If you have patience, a mild demeanor and can keep up a "happy face" when they make a mistake, they are reliable hunters and really nice home companions. The guys I know who have them like them, but have had to deal with the sensitivity. It all depends on what you're looking and prepared for in training and temperament. No matter what you get though...you're going to have a blast![up]

Only suggestion I would make if that if you are a waterfowler as well as upland hunter I would look at more of a versatile breed. Although they are great upland dogs when trained properly the ones I have seen hate the water.

Awesome wish I could get another dog, I want a deer tracking dog...I hear of to many people losing deer, so thats my plan

Good luck. Saw the pictures of those dogs and they look real sharp.[up] Also I have always heard all good things about the dogs. Great pets and hunters, partner for life.

Think real hard and reserch well, its a 10-14 year commitment.I have a english pointer they like to run big, growing up we always gsp's. ep's are great dogs but are hard headed.pointers are good dogs but some are just a one trick pony.

I think the braque is a great dog. I was new to gun dog few years ago as well and knew very little. I suggest joining NAVDHA north American versatile hunting dog association. They are a great organization and helped me out a lot. I real enjoy training with them. Have worked with a few braque on training days with positive results. Good luck

Tika270 can you please tell me what is that all strapped around the dog neck? I've never seen that before. Not ever hunted with dogs and none of my friends do either so I do not know. I have trained K-9 for police but I am do we do not use anything but collars. Well any way I would like to learn something new and am asking for I do not know. Does it hurt the dog? Or elongate the dog neck with so many things on? Training or tracking tools? Maybe this will others who do not know and may find it interesting and if they've ver decided to get into hunting with a dog. From what I am reading it seems to be pretty hard work and you have to pretty much be deticated to this type of sport with a dog. Thanks in advance for the info any one. I'm learning something new here :D

One is his collar second is a e collar with his locate beeper
The third is his gps collar. He has along neck the extra collars
Dont seem to bother him.

Would be great I guess if some could condense it all into to one with today's techology huh. Thanks for telling me what they are. They look so big in the pic you shared of you good looking parnter there. I may get into that part of hunting appears to be a lot of fun. I miss my k-9 dog very much, was my best friend and partner.

The best recommendation I have for you is to visit Garry Malzone and Indian Creek Kennels in Sparta, NJ. He breeds the best hunting dogs around and all of his make fantastic family dogs as well. They are English Pointers and even if you are not interested (yet) in this breed, you have to pay Garry a visit. I can almost guarantee that you will be converted. It's difficult to leave his place and then think about purchasing any other dog. I have 2 pointers from him and I couldn't be happier! Best of luck to you.
