June 13, 2005
Dear Governor Jon Corzine,
I am writing to you in the support of a 2006 Bear hunt in the state of NJ. As we all know there has been lots of controversy on this subject and it has now become an issue for you to address as you are our new Governor.
I as a licensed NJ hunter am not going to stand outside your house with signs disrupting your personal life as myself and all the rest of the hunters have enough respect to not bother you and your family during your personal time.
I want to make you aware of a protest that is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 24, 2006 ~ 11am - 1pm in front of your place of residence by the bear advocates group.
This group as they do have rights as Americans to do so are planning this protest based on there beliefs (cute, cuddly, friendly animals) and not focused on the real problem at hand which is over population and the chance for loss or injured life to a human.
It has been proven that although Bears are usually shy and stay away there proven attacks on people and livestock as well as pets.
On December 10th, 2003 NJ approved the first Bear hunt in 33 years. This hunt all though being controversial played a big part in the conservation of NJ’s Bear population. It was the start to a management plan and it kept the Bears in check with fewer complaints for the next year.
The hunt also helped with population numbers that NJ could handle. In 2003 the predicted harvest was to be in the 272 to 408 Bears to be harvested the hunt yielded 328 Bears which lowered the amount of Bear complaints for 2004.
Between the months of January and August 2004 there were 519 Bear complaints and do to the blocking of the NJ Bear hunt in 2004 the Bear complaints for the same time frame in 2005 totaled 805. As they say, do the math!
Hunting is the only means of Management to control Bears. There are no natural predators to Bears other then Humans and Cars in the state of NJ. Without hunting that leaves the Cars, I don’t know about you but I don’t think I want to be worrying about hitting a Bear with my car every other day because we are over populated and they are Cute, Cuddly and just want to be petted ????
I am happy these bear groups are using there freedom of speech and there right to protest but they should be taking this time and focusing it on what is really Killing the Bears and other wildlife in NJ “Urban Sprawl” . Developers in NJ are doing a number on the habitat these animals need to live in peace, without human contact.
Keep building and we will not have a Bear, Deer, Turkey or Squirrel problem as there will be no habitat for these animals and the will be gone
.
I have just heard about Stuart Chaifetz calling on the state to transfer $2 million budgeted for recreational hunting programs from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife into New Jersey’s Department of Education’s special education and autism grants?
This is absurd for being an animal rights activist he really has not done his homework. These moneys even though they go towards hunting programs are in place to manage our wildlife populations and provide open space for the wildlife that live in this state that we are slowly taking away there land.
These moneys from the wildlife grants are used for conservation, education, and protection.
If Stuart wants money for special education for disabled children and persons I am all for it and would even support him with it as I am also a father of a handicapped child with Cerebral Palsy.
I would like for there to be special education for handicapped kids as well, as a matter of fact there is and there is active research to find cures as well as grants and charities that support this kind of need.
But to take moneys from New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife a division that is under funded as it is and put it towards Autism is uncalled for.
Autism is a world wide problem that is spread through out our country. If Stuart wants a Autism fund go to the US Congress and apply for a grant Autism is something that should be fought as a country not a state.!
I am an avid hunter asking as a tax paying resident of NJ and father of a disabled child to deny his request to have funds moved from the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife.
We need this money where it is as it is going towards Bear Education which is a major problem in NJ.
I am also asking that you allow another Bear hunt for the 2006 season as hunting is the only means of management were the animal has no predator before someone is injured or killed worse yet being a child as Bears have less fear to children do to there size.
Governor I would like to thank you for your time and consideration into this matter.
Sincerely
SMG
