tell that to the bears i bumped into the past 3 weeks, including 2 mamas with cubs. none ran away, all stood their ground. no bluff charges, but way too close for my comfort. I've only had one bear run away ever.Remember, 9 out of 10 bears will run away, but you never know when that 10th bear is standing in front of you

If you Google "bear attacks" a list comes up that documents almost 63 since the 1970's. Then consider how accurate the documentation or lack of it was in the '20's and '30's the number of fatal black bear attacks in the last 109 years is at least double the NYT number. That comes down to more than one attack per year
