I was watching breed all about it on animal planet a few weeks ago and they said that sometimes they're not to good with kids thats why i ask as always depends on the individual dog but thats just a blanket statement

said that sometimes they're not to good with kids
Mine will chase the kids around and play(not my kids), but if they scream or act scared he becomes more agressive. Friend of mine said, when his new born came home, the dog became more protective of the house.

Also in the pool, mine goes nuts if you start slashing or appear in danger. As if he's trying to save or help you.

like i said i'm not trying to talk down on the breed just what was said i have a basset and a pit mix and my pit would never hurt a fly i was just telling him what i heard.....i want a lab/chessie but my wife is a vet tech and she's a fan of hounds and calls labs "big dumb dogs".....do they only come in brown?..thats the only color ive ever seen

The Chessie is a great breed, but if you're a first time dog owner, get a lab. They are strong confident and hard headed dogs at times. Great family dogs. You have to put in the time with them as with any other dog. If you are dominant, strong and confident and willing to be patient with a sometimes stubborn dog then go ahead. If you are the type to spoil a dog and be relaxed with training then the Chessie will take over and will get very dominant and possibly aggressive. Just my .02 cents based on a few that I know.

I got mine as a rescue at age 1 1/2years(i've had her for over a year now) so they said). She is a wonderful dog that loves to play alone or with my 2 year old Pudelpointer. She was very obedient till my wife started spoiling her. Now I have to work harder to reverse her doing(wife just doesn't understand hunting dog training). Now understand they are a very possessive bread. Mine think every new toy that come into the house is hers and she hordes them, even if I buy 2 identical ones. I'm in Clark if you want to meet and check one out close up. Hey I need a dog sitter for the last week in april!!! LOL [rofl]

The one I had was the best dog I ever owned. She was great with kids and people in general, and would protect the family if anyone got loud or threatened one of us. She never needed any real training to find or retrieve birds. The only issue we had was with other dogs she didn't know. She did get along with my male English Setter real well in the dog coup, but not while hunting. I had hoped to use her to retrieve the birds my setter had pointed, but all they did was fight over the birds so that never worked out.
