CRAZYEDDY - to get to the point regarding trout flies, there are literally thousands of good patterns that will catch flies. But here's the real secret to fly fishing - the fly you use almost NEVER matters. Trout have an IQ of 6. They are simply cold blooded eating machines. If they are feeding, any fly placed in their cone of view will be eaten so long as you are not dragging that fly unnaturally through or on top of the water column.

Keep your flies basic at first. Some caddis pupa, some caddis elk hair dries, some Adams and blue wing olive (BWO) dry flies, some pheasant tails and hare's ears, and some woolly buggers is a great start and you can catch fish on most waters anywhere that trout live. No need to go nuts and buy thousands of flies. I know an excellent fly fisherman that ONLY fishes pheasant tail nymphs. He carries no other flies and has been successful for more than 50 years this way. That is way too boring for me, but it proves the theory that flies do not matter.

You really were on the button with that one. When I first got into fly fishing 9 years ago, I was 18 at the time and didn't have anyone to guide me. So I bought up as many books as I could, including Lefty Kreh's Presenting the Fly... Pretty much what I learned from the book, which was a whole heck of alot, is that fly selection is not nearly as integral as having an accurate cast, a natural drift, and confidence in yourself. Just be prepared to spend alot of money and to have a ton of fun. I have been so addicted to it since I started that I own 7 rods and reels, not including the ones I broke, I have fished almost the entire northeast for trout, bass, pickerel and northerns, including 5 salmon river trips, and I am now planning my second trip to the bahamas for bonefishing and an attempt to get a shark on the fly. Always work your way upstream when trout fishing and try to be as stealthy as you can. Fly fishing is not much different than hunting in that aspect. Stay low, stalk quietly, locate your prey, and shoot your cast accurately. Good Luck and tight lines

I like to drill a Purina Trout Chow pellet on a No.10 light wire hook if I want it to float
Glue a coffee bean on a hook lol. It works great. If you really want to have a good day with the "coffee bean beetle" head to the Little Lehigh near Allentown, PA.

Flip some rocks over when you get to the river and see whats underneath. Try and match it with whatever flies you have in your flybox!

I learned alot by using a stomach pump on stocked trout (only). It'll allow you to see first hand what the trout are eating over the course of the day.
