I got the savage 22lr, shoots smooth and doesn't feel like a toy gun. I suggest getting one with an accu-trigger, trigger pull is a little stiff on the one I got, wish I got the accu-trigger. The neighbor has the savage .17 with the accutrigger and you can't go wrong with that either.
 
You should get both..
22 for squirrels and target. 17 for chucks and targets at longer ranges.. like most have said.
Like hfc76 said I like the 22's that are more full size and feel like big boy rifles.. savage has nice rifles at affordable prices..
