After a lot of self education and wandering around doing lots of tracking in the snow the last two weeks I finally dropped a nice coyote.
It's a beauty with a lot of red in it.
I was by myself Friday morning and I used the new electronic caller that my wife got me for Christmas. Its the Foxpro Spitfire with remote control.
I set up in an area that I scouted during muzzleloader where I found just as much coyote sign as I did deer sign.
After just a minute and a half of "Coyote Locator" out of the Spitfire, I was nearly run over by two coyotes running full bore towards the caller.
The lead one saw me and actually started running at me. I shot him with a 3" mag load of old 3" Federal No. 2 lead shot that I have had on my shelf since the ban on lead for waterfowl back in the late eighties.
He rolled and got up and ran back the way he came and I got another shot in him and the third shot shredded wood.
They retreated and then started to howl, bark and snarl at about hundred yards. It was the scariest thing I ever heard in the woods.
After seeing how the 2's weren't that effective, I grabbed the caller, retreated to the truck and called for backup !
My buddy Will met me out at the highway with some T shot and back we went.
The blood was easy to follow in the snow, even for me, the colorblind tracker.
He was sitting up about 150 yards from where I shot. The heavier load finished him.
Too much excitement for this old guy.
Now, onto successfully snaring one !
