Had some time sunday to go out and scout and found a nice spot with a bunch of running water that i thought would stay open through the snow and had a ton of ducks in it. Unfortunately because of work i did not have any time to get out and scout it any more so when i got to the spot today it was completely frozen, not a single square inch of open water anywhere[wallmad] i should have known better[wallmad]. With no other option and not wanting to make the return 1/2 mile trip through the knee deep snow just yet we decided to sit down and wait till day light with the hope of pass shooting some geese or ducks. Then as we were siiting down we noticed what looked like a small open patch of water, we walked over and to our dissapointment it was just a patch of black ice[cry]. This got the wheels turning in my head, if the black ice could trick me, maybe it will trick the birds too. We set up a few decoys right on the ice and i few in the white ice around it figuring it couldnt hurt. Five minutes into shooting time we still have not heard or seen a duck, thinking the day was a bust we just sat there and relaxed taking in the beauty of the snow and ice, when out of the corner of my eye i catch movement and look up to see three black ducks cupped up feet down dropping into the decoys[eek][eek] I couldnt believe that it was working. We jumped up and i hit one with the third shot. My buddy missed. We both should have killed one but we were not prepared at all[rofl]. My duck hits the ice and immediately jumps up and starts running so i follow suit. Usually i have no problem running down a duck on dry land but i learned a valuable lesson today, duck can run really well on the ice[rofl], so after 10 yards of that nonsense i throw a shell in the gun and finish him off[rofl] Had a few other groups fly over and take a look that we got some shooting at but couldnt shoot real well but it was still a great morning and im still in shock that our little black ice trick actually worked[rofl]
