My biggest problem is portion control when I eat. I'm on 500mg of Metformin 2X a day and my sugar is still over 200 in the morning so i am also taking 200-600mg of R-ALA to get it lower.

i found out last december that i have type2 .i always keep some type of sugar in my pocket just in case.the worst thing hunting with it so far is that i always have to leave the woods early because i need to piss all the time

I have been diabetic for 23 yrs and hunting longer than that. I am healthy and in good shape. Because I take care of myself. That is the number 1 thing take care of yourself and you will lead a healthy life. I really can't tell you how it affects my hunting because I had it so long. I will say I do fine. I'm 43 years old and I can still set hanging stand up more than 20 feet from the ground without help.
Most important you need to get your sugar under control 500 is way to high. Then see how your meds affect you. Your biggest danger is going to be low blood sugar once your meds start working and you learn how they affect you. I carry life savers and cherry slices (candy) in case I go low. There are also some glucose tablets and gels on the market.
Hope this helps if you have any questions feel free to PM me

Moderation and planning. I hate wheat pasta, I will eat regular pasta but for lunch only so I have the afternoon to burn it off. Planning meals like that can give you what you want but always in moderation. I do 1000mg of metformin 2x a day, actos for lunch and januvia w/ metformin at night. All that and I still have to work out 3=4x a week. It's a battle and 3 years into it, I've got a handle on it and am educated about it to know what will happen when I eat this or drink that, it's learning curve that you need to flatten and you will be able to control it. My Dr prescribed a diabetes class and recommended to see a nutritionist, i did both but after a year and if I'd done it earlier, I would have controlled it a lot sooner.
I am healthy and in good shape.
So am I, never been fat and have always played sports and always played in a softball, basketball flag football league into my late 30's. Type 2 is not hereditery but I was certainly predisposed as both T1 and T2 are rampant in my family.

I know that all to well. I don't give myself much of a break and in karate class, sometimes we work judo throws and falls for a class and I am barely moving the next day. I have abused my body with sports my whole life. Torn ACL & MCL, broke both ankles and 6 other bones. I have bone spurs in my ankle that kill me after every hunt becase of the long hikes on unever terrain. I was gonna get them operated on after last hunting season and I find myself saying the same thing this season. It's brutal at times but I still love everything that I do. At 45, I fell more unstoppable now more so than ever, i'm still strong, I can out quick and out smart a lot of younger bucks in karate class during sparring. A pickup game of Bball is no problem until the next day when I'm sore but when I'm playing, I can still school the younger players. Nothing is that different for me with diabetes except the fact that I am mre aware of everything I am doing to the inside of my body.

1 more thing, it's nice to have a post with no haters chiming in...[rofl] just had to say it.

You guys are all babies just suck it up...no one on fort dix has diabeeeeettttttes (they cant spell it anyhow)

Id say in all the years of dealing with it fitness, exercise, and paying attention to eating relatively healthy is the ticket. Ive seen people get off of meds because they did all of the above. It just makes the quality of life that much better. My brother has made so much progress since he has started watching his diet and exercising some. Ive gotten is numbers from 13 to 7.2 in a short time with a great blood pressure and all around fitness level as well as cholesterol under 170.

Since I have had heart failure and angina at the young age of 15 I have been into fitness and its the fountain of youth guys.

Good foot care; comfortable non-binding sox. Bring shoes/sox to change into for the drive home. Keep your feet/hands warm.

Take your meds; check your sugar.

Type II is reversible, or can be reduced in severity--I DID IT![up][up][up] Monitor your eating, weight, and exercise.

Its not the end of the world--its one more thing about being an "older hunter". Good luck.

The truest words ever posted on this site Tom. I'm 45 and can do all the same things I did 20 years ago, just more sore the next day but what I say to my wife is that it's a small price to pay for living.
Amen...I couldnt live my life the way I do without exercise. I was morbidly obese in my youth and the doctors said at 15 I had test results of a 45 year old male.

Even the smallest amount will help you guys believe it or not...a simple walk every night would do wonders.

Glad to say that I am no longer a diabetic, 2 years ago A1c of 14.7 and high BP almost 300 pounds..

Lost 96lbs and I no longer take any meds for diabetes.

As far as the cold, I can't stay out as long as I use too, hands and feet go first...

And 3 days after I was diagnosed I woke up and couldn't see shit, ran to to the eye Dr and was told that my sugar was the blame, went through 3 dif prescriptions in a year before my eyes leveled out...

does metformin give you guys the craps like it does to me.man that stuff sucks
I took actoplus and yes it did...

I said earlier just take care of yourself. I have been following this post and you have gotten some great advice. I have had diabetes for over 20 years and I have never let it stop me, prevent me from doing what I want, get in my way or deter me. To me its part of my everyday life. [up]
