I decided to purchase a crossbow after putting it off since the state legalized them. I wasnt sure if I would like them. Well, there awesome. These things are deadly.![ninja] I purchased an Excaliber Equinox with the light stuff package. Everything I need to get going. I talked to a couple of guys that are very happy with there Excaliburs, and the simplicity of the set up of these bows is great. I put it together out of the box in 10 minutes and shooting a bit high. A few clicks and the bow was dead on.[spy]
I was debating what broadhead to use. The manufactuer instructions are saying I have to use a 150 grain head. Then I was told buy the guys at the archery shop that if I chose a mechanical, I could shoot any grain head I want, and also some suggestions from this sight. I went with my 100 grain spitfires.
I went out t my spot, and decided I did not feeling climbing a tree and wanted to try hunting from the ground, so I found myself a spot with some good back cover, and tucked myself in. No blind, just a bit of cover around me. I sat for a bit, and 3 doe came barreling past me, within 4 feet.[eek] My heart was racing, what a rush. Then about 30 minutes later I saw a doe about 100 yards off. Another 20 minutes, and a nice doe dropped down and was less then 15 yards from me,,[eek] I already had the scope to my eye and safety off. I waited for her to clear the hollys, and put the cross hairs on her lungs, pulled the trigger. Now, these bolts fly so fast I could not tell where the arrow went. But by the way she took off like a rocket with her tail down, I felt confident it was a solid hit. I watched her go about 70 yards, the lost sight of her when she dropped below the hill.
I look to my right, and there was her fawn standing there, looking puzzled [confused] Her fawn walked right up to where I was sitting, and passed me, no more then 3 feet away.[ko] The fawn had no idea I was there. I gave it some time, then stood up and go check the bolt and look for blood, look to my left, and there where 20 deer standing there! The group to the left immediately made a retreat, while the group to the right stood there, fo rwhat seemed like 2 minutes, stairing at me, then scooted off.
I found the bolt covered in blood, and an outstanding blood trail. She was just over the other side of the hill, down! I double lunged her at 15 yards. this was one of the most exciting hunts I have had in some time. And I had I been using my regular bow, I would have gotten the shot off at that close distance due to the movement. She was a mature Doe, and would have picked me off. It was a great hunt, and a great expierence. And considering I put together the bow and sighted it in the night before, I can say I am vey satisfied with my Excalibur.[up]

Cool story, congrats on your 1st crossbow kill! ;)[up]

Congrats, the smile in the first pic says it all [up][up]

sweet. I think the level of excitement is from a new weapon and the fact that you were on the ground. I agree that with a vert bow, you would've been busted as it has happened to me too many times on the ground this year. I guess I need a xbow [ko] Congrats on your 2 firsts. [up]
