I think it's possible. Especially during the rut where a CONSISTENT bait location will draw in the girls, and, the boys will follow.
Outside of the rut, I really dont think bait in required. If you have good bucks on your property, THEY'RE EATING SOMETHING ! Find whatever that may be, get an idea of where he is bedding, slip in as close to the bed as possible, between there and the food...Set'up downwind and hope for the best.
If you're going to bait, you gotta do it carefully. Like said above, they KNOW you were there.
1 property I hunt is all over grown fields and big hills. The deer bed on the hills. We bait my brothers stand and blind location. The deer can see us come in where we used to bait, while bedded. So, we elected to move the bait about 100 yards away from the stand locations, in a natural travel area.
The deer funnel down, past the stand locations, and on to where the bait is. We picked an area behind a bunch of tall brush. We sneak in behind the brush, do the baiting for him and get out, without being seen. We go in with scent washed clothing and spray our hands and boots down very well. activity is good on the camera, big bucks and doe.
Let me add..Hunting OVER your bait is NOT a good idea.
1- a mature buck will always approach a bait site from downwind, so, if you're over the bait, odds are ALREADY stacked against you.
2- a mature buck will likely hit the bait at night, so, as you're getting down, theres a good chance he's on his way and seeing you. Also, if deer come in late, you're likely to get stuck in your stand.
Bait far away from your stand, try to draw deer past you. That way, you have a better chance of seeing that mature buck during shooting light, and, you can wait until the deer move past and then climb down and sneak out undetected.
