I think it depends on where you hunt. Last 3 years I hunted in Colliers Mills and it's tough to SEE a deer without bait. This year I'm hunting on private property in zone 10, NO bait and lots of deer.

ive used bait in many spots but noticed after september the mature bucks hit bait at night, maybe im just in a bad spot? i gave up sitting over bait for bucks and now sit between the bait and bedding areas, seems to work alot better

I began baiting one of my properties 3 years ago. In those 3 years I didn't kill a buck! This year I hunted my non baited property and finally shot a buck! Next year all my properties will be bait free, but I plan on starting food plots. When I first started hunting, all I did was still hunt with the recurve. I just bought some wood arrows and put away my compound. Back to basics for me.

If baiting isnt allowed, or is "gay"(which I dont care either way)Shouldnt in line muzzleloaders with scopes, 3 1/2 in buck shot, & 80% let off bows also be considered unfair advantages??or gay??? spot and stalk with a flint lock muzzy or recurve and see how many trophies you get.. unless you have a lot of property, most guys need to bait to draw deer on the small properties they have.. Whatever works.. My opinion, A true monster mature buck isnt coming to a bait pile to eat unless he's real hard up or looking for does durring the rut..but every property and area is different..

I think it's possible. Especially during the rut where a CONSISTENT bait location will draw in the girls, and, the boys will follow.

Outside of the rut, I really dont think bait in required. If you have good bucks on your property, THEY'RE EATING SOMETHING ! Find whatever that may be, get an idea of where he is bedding, slip in as close to the bed as possible, between there and the food...Set'up downwind and hope for the best.

If you're going to bait, you gotta do it carefully. Like said above, they KNOW you were there.

1 property I hunt is all over grown fields and big hills. The deer bed on the hills. We bait my brothers stand and blind location. The deer can see us come in where we used to bait, while bedded. So, we elected to move the bait about 100 yards away from the stand locations, in a natural travel area.

The deer funnel down, past the stand locations, and on to where the bait is. We picked an area behind a bunch of tall brush. We sneak in behind the brush, do the baiting for him and get out, without being seen. We go in with scent washed clothing and spray our hands and boots down very well. activity is good on the camera, big bucks and doe.

Let me add..Hunting OVER your bait is NOT a good idea.

1- a mature buck will always approach a bait site from downwind, so, if you're over the bait, odds are ALREADY stacked against you.

2- a mature buck will likely hit the bait at night, so, as you're getting down, theres a good chance he's on his way and seeing you. Also, if deer come in late, you're likely to get stuck in your stand.

Bait far away from your stand, try to draw deer past you. That way, you have a better chance of seeing that mature buck during shooting light, and, you can wait until the deer move past and then climb down and sneak out undetected.

i have baited in the past but i am seeing more and more (as i share hunting areas with other hunters) the deer just completely avoiding the bait. an area that i was seeing deerat w/o bait, someone would come and throw some corn out and the deer would pretty much avoid that area.
