i try and guide a sea duck hunt for my dad every year. this year flinthunter was with us. not too bad of a day. we hunted 7 miles from port. had a limit of 8 scoters by 9am. one hen and drake where black scoters, the rest are surf scoters.

how do you pick a spot 7 miles out on open water?
i would like to say that is the place they are feeding at. right now they are feeding on popular fishing spots. i had a ton of birds around me on sunday, while fishing.
i hunt spots that are not fished, but have boat traffic near us. this keeps the birds in the air. i hunted in a area that has fishing spots in all directions, but 2-4 miles away. that is plenty of buffer.
i did have a guy come close and move off. he was wondering why we where there. most likley he was watching the sounder trying to figure out why i was set there. he couldn't figure it out, and left.

if you have the chance to try sea duck hunting, jump on it. it is like nothing duck hunters have done before.
