Its not how great of a hunter you are, its how great the property is that you hunt on.
thats not exactly true...actually not at all...from all of the hunters I know i would say maybe 25% of them actually are good enough hunters to kill bucks like this consistently. Sitting on your butt and being able to shoot is only a piece of the game. You need to think about scouting for these bucks, learning their habits, patterns, bedding areas, feeding sources...have the right stand placement, playing the wind, keeping scent free, and then putting in the time...you cant really make too many mistakes and kill bucks 4+ years old......so all im saying is you cant put anyone on a piece of prime property and expect them to come away with bucks like these

awesome bucks by the way, truly amazing deer, he is having one hell of a year, good for the drury's

Holy cow, that is unbelievable. Congrats to him [up]

Ever listen to the guys on the videos talk about the deer they are hunting ? You will, more often than not, hear them say:
"the buck is bedding over..."
"we're going to hopefully catch this buck on his way back to bed"
"we're in close to this bucks bed"
"we pulled out all of the stops and when right to this bucks bedding area"
"we hung a great stand in this deers bedding area".

Or,

"with a north west wind this buck should enter this field over here"
"we needed an east wind to hunt this stand"

These consistent big buck slayers just dont go in the woods, find a good spot and drop corn. They've keyed in on a SPECIFIC buck, and learned him. Knowing where a buck is bedding is the MOST important information a hunter can have.

Second most important information is learning how he will travel your property for all given wind directions, because a MATURE buck will ALWAYS have the wind in his favor and ALWAYS enter a destination DOWNWIND.

That big 242lb deer ChrisMs friend just shot- he EARNED that buck because he keyed in on him. Watched him for 2 seasons, knew where he was bedding and devised a plan. That is the tactic of a HUNTER.

So, property excuses are valid, but, only to a point.

Once again,Ill try to voice my opinion a bit different than my earlier post, and without trying to piss anyone off.

If you have enough money, enough quality managed land in a proven big buck producing area, enough time, enough trail cameras out and 30 guys in your crew in multiple states watching every inch of every biologic foodplot on every farm you have access to,and reporting all the info back to you twice a day as to the whereabouts of the giants, Im fairly certain that you to can kill at least 1 giant a year...I love the Drurys, don't get me wrong I am not mocking them, I am just telling you all how it is...Deer Hunting is big business, and The Drurys know we count on them to produce the giants every year. These guys are very shrewd business men with unlimited resources.Deer Hunting is there livelihood, and they will stop at nothing to make sure they continue to produce the big Buck$$$.
Do they hunt hard? Of course they do,and they have a burning passion for it like the rest of us, but there are times they roll into camp solely based upon what someone else has been seeing and has been reporting back to them, then they jump in a tree like the rest of us and stay there until they kill there target buck.Of course there are many different variables, but anyone that thinks it's done any other way, simply has not been around enough people that are in the deer business and count on killing big deer to reach there career goals and expectations.

Great Bucks. This is what they do for a living. And they are very good at it. A lot of the post have valid points. Point is they hunt very hard in an area that has BIG Bucks. Congrats on killing 2 monsters. I'm next. Lol

Some interesting posts here. To kill big bucks you have to hunt where they live. I know for a fact that Mark works his butt off to first and foremost bring age structure to his properties and even more importantly kill does. You can plant anything you want but until you are ready to pass up 3 year old deer to at least let them get to 4 seeing a true giant will probably never happen at least on ground that you can control what you are shooting. Ultimately if you can let them get to 5 or 6 years old the animals they turn in to when they get this old is truly something special. I have been blessed to see some deer that we've passed on many occasions on our leases turn in to true giants, and to have had been part of seeing a plan come to fruition is something that I am very proud of. Providing age structure and managing your doe herd are the 2 biggest pieces (IMO) of the QDM puzzle. Adding quality high protein forage is second in my book.
