I hunt in Zone 24 and the deer aren't spectacular in the area... kinda small compared to many other zones in Jersey. I have been baiting with corn but have only seen squirrels and *****. I've been studying scent luring techniques and decided to try making a mock scrape on Tuesday. I haven't seen any scrapes in the area but plenty of tracks and paths. I used a stick and scrape up the ground in a V and then poured buck urine on the site. It rained like hell on Wednesday and I didn't expect to see anything when I went back Thursday. Boy was I surprised. There were 3 scrapes surrounding my mock scrape all within 4' of the site. I must have pissed of something. I didn't see or hear anything but I'm hoping with the cold weather coming, I'll be able to help get 24 back on the map. I set up a trail cam and will post pics if anything shows up.

Is there a licking branch above the scrape? If not then probably turkeys [wallmad]

There was no licking branch above the tree I chose which was a mistake. I know it's a ballsy move but as I left last night I made a new scrape at a tree with a licking branch. I inspected all three scrapes and saw hoof prints. They were also in a V shape (kinda hard to see in the pic). I will be hitting my stand tonight and will post any new information and hopefully some pics from the trail cam. My father took me hunting when I was in the 5th grade (I'm now 30) and we have only hunted this private land. I really need to find some place a little closer to home because this drive is killing me and my car! I live in Bergen county and teach in Orange.. I cut out of school early and 2 hours later I'm in my stand.

I've found a few scrapes this year with no licking branch.
I have seen quite a few of them this year. In fact one of the better scrapes I have in an area is under nothing more than just one tiny pricker bush limb sticking off the side of a trail.

The reality is though, most of those random scrapes either just pop up next to other larger scrapes that are the ones that will actually get hit regularly, or they just never get hit again at all.
