I can tell that there is some concern about the status of the bow perimeter bill. Although I don't have a crystal ball to tell me the future about this bill (just a Magic Eight ball for those that are old enough to remember, but I keep getting different answers[mad])here are some things to keep in mind.
We've spent nearly three years educating legislators about the merits of the bill. Based on the bill's merits, two years ago we got it passed overwhelmingly in the assembly and by voice vote overwhelmingly in the senate. Senator Codey wouldn't allow the bill to be heard and it died last year.
We resurrected the bill this year and due to efforts to educate the assembly and senate, along with a new senate president (Sen Sweeney) and speaker (Speaker Oliver) we were able to get overwhelming support in both houses and the bill was sent to the Governor.
The Governor now has a bow perimeter bill, which was amended to take every safety precautuion and also supports sound public policy. It will help to provide better access to deer populations for purposes of culling, which will help with forest regeneration, habitat improvement, reduce deer/car accidents, minimize the ability for Lyme disease to be transmitted and allow hunters the opportunity to enjoy the wilderness and put food on their table.
Again, it took three years to get the bill to the Governor (actually, the bill has been around for a much longer time and was initiated by the UBNJ) so let's have faith that the Governor will recognize that a lot of smart people believed enough in the merits of the bill to make sure it got to his desk.
It's a good idea to call him and remind him that the bill might be on the bottom of one of his paper piles
and to pull it out and sign it.[up]
Keep the faith - but make the phone call.
