My oak trees are already dropping acorns, well they arent even acorn, they are like the top of an acorn but small. they look just like shunken down acorn caps. I assume from the high heat and lack of rain it is going to take a toll on the acorn crop in certain areas. They are dropping all over my property already. Some look like 4 or 5 acorn caps stuck together. Crazy.. [confused]

Put a hurtin on most everyone last year. They'll be on the move more now searching and feeding rather than staying put in one place.
i looked at the the oaks around me few days ago and didnt really notice an abudance of acorns.
i hope they are scarce this year, as last year i spent a couple hundred bucks uping the bait to draw the deer away from the acorns. still didnt see much though.

while the bumper acorn crop may have scattered the deer....it also provided them with quite a bit of fat to make it through a tough winter....they were still eating leftover white oak acorns in January where I was hunting....

Yeah, last year I recall tons and tons of acorns all over the place. I have also noticed early this summer some acorns on the small side already falling. I noticed as early as July 4th and thought that was odd. My guess would be the trees are letting go of some acorns and leaves early due to the hot and dry summer. They do this in order to "survive" the drought and sacrifice some leaves for the better good of the rest of the tree. My sycamore in my backyard dropped a ton of leaves a week ago, but still looks plenty healthy. It did the same back in 1999/2000.

They do and I heard not all trees at once , so they seem to cycle between spots. But last year it seemed like every tree dropped a load.

Agreed there are small stunted acorns falling. A few small to medium sized in the woods but no giants like last year so far. I don't think its water related as the front yard oaks suck up the sprinkler water so I can't use that as an excuse. Last year was a 20 year record around here[eek]
